Personal Safety Best Practices

This page provides practical, proactive tips to help students, faculty, and staff stay alert, prepared, and confident both on and off campus. While no set of actions can eliminate all risk, following these best practices can help reduce vulnerability and support a safer, more welcoming learning environment for everyone at Somerset Community College.

  • Remain alert and aware of your surroundings at all times, both on and off campus.
  • Avoid distractions such as excessive phone use when walking, especially at night.
  • Trust your instincts—if a situation or individual feels unsafe, remove yourself and seek help.
  • Plan routes in advance and favor well-lit, populated areas.
  • Carry keys in your hand when approaching vehicles or residence halls.
  • Lock your vehicle and keep personal belongings secure and out of sight.
  • Avoid displaying expensive items such as electronics or jewelry in public.
  • Do not share personal information, such as schedules or travel plans, publicly or on social media.
  • Walk with others whenever possible, especially at night.
  • Use the campus escort service when available.
  • Park in well-lit, designated areas and lock your vehicle.
  • Check the surrounding area and back seat before entering your car.
  • Attend social events with trusted friends and leave together when possible.
  • Monitor your food and beverages at all times.
  • Know your limits and make responsible choices regarding alcohol consumption.
  • Identify event staff, campus security, or trusted contacts in advance.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication when available.
  • Protect laptops, tablets, and phones with passwords, PINs, or biometric authentication.
  • Keep operating systems, apps, and security software up to date.
  • Be cautious when clicking links or downloading attachments from unknown senders.
  • Avoid oversharing personal or location-based information on social media.
  • Use secure networks; avoid public Wi‑Fi without a trusted VPN.
  • Log out of shared or public computers.
  • Report phishing, hacking attempts, identity theft, or online harassment promptly.
