Rebecca Bowlin of Monticello received the award and is now a candidate for the Division’s Student of the Year Award, to be announced in May 2025.

MLTs work in clinical laboratories within hospitals, healthcare settings, or industrial settings. While enrolled in the program, students collect patient specimens and perform tests in such areas as blood banking, clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology and urinalysis. Graduates earn a phlebotomy certificate within the program’s curriculum and are prepared to take the Board of Certification examination as an MLT.

Bowlin, who attends SCC on the Charlotte Leis Endowment Scholarship, presently works at Wayne County Hospital as a phlebotomist and is highly complimentary of the program’s faculty. “MLT is a great program, and Ms. Edwards has done a phenomenal job in rebuilding the program,” states Bowlin. “She has influenced me personally and professionally and the work I do in my current job is better because I understand why I do what I do.”

Bowlin is scheduled to graduate in May 2025 and plans to continue to work for Wayne County Hospital. She is married to Jesse Patton and the couple has two children, David and Julia.
