Adycin Truett from McKee, Kentucky daughter of Lisa and Steven Truett is the proud recipient of the Randall and Victoria Weddle Scholarship at Somerset Community College.
Truett, a former athlete from Jackson County High School continues to be involved in her community with a desire to positively impact others as she starts her nursing education at SCC. Her goal is to graduate in December 2025 and then pursue a four-year nursing degree from Eastern Kentucky University, focusing on pediatric or labor and delivery care.
"SCC has made a significant difference in my life. Balancing nursing school with long hours in the classroom and at clinicals was challenging while trying to hold down a job. Thanks to its affordability, I was able to reduce my hours and work part-time as a CNA, allowing me to concentrate on my studies."
However, a busy schedule is not new to Truett. During her time in high school, she received two 110% overall grade awards in 2022 and 2023 at the end-of-year banquets. She was an active member of the Bible Club, Link Crew, National Honor Society, Beta Club, and Spanish Club. Additionally, she served as the president of the Hispanic Honor Society in 2022-2023. Truett is also actively involved in her church’s youth group and volunteers to help with the younger kids' activities.
“I chose SCC because it is close to home,” Truett said, “I didn’t have to move and it is a good commute for me. I also chose it because it is more affordable. I love the smaller classes that SCC has so I can get one-on-one with my teachers. It helps me to learn better.”
Truett has a dream to help others in the commonwealth which she calls home.
“I would love to obtain a job at the University of Kentucky because they are the best children’s hospital and not too far away from home,” Truett said.
Both Randall and Victoria Weddle grew up in Southeastern Kentucky and attending college after high school was not an option. The Weddle’s wanted to find a way to give back to their community. Randall Weddle stated, “We want to help people and give them opportunities that we didn’t have growing up. Supporting the students who attend the Laurel Campus of Somerset Community College is a perfect way to give back.”
The Weddle’s want young adults who are from Southeastern Kentucky to know that they can be successful and achieve their dreams regardless of their background or past. Weddle’s message to students, “It is not wanting to win that makes you a winner; it is refusing to fail. It is never too late to get a college education.”
Randall and Victoria Weddle give five scholarship recipients $1,500 per semester. These scholarships are for students who attend SCC’s Laurel Campus. The merit-based awards are available to freshmen or sophomores who keep a 3.0 grade point average.
