SCC Alumnus Jacob West’s journey from student to national educator and influencer stylist

Somerset Community College (SCC) is proud to celebrate the remarkable journey of Jacob West, an SCC alumnus whose path to becoming a successful cosmetologist is as inspiring as it is unconventional. Jacob's story is a testament to the impact of quality education, mentorship, and the power of serendipity.

Jacob's path into cosmetology began unexpectedly. Initially enrolled in occupational therapy classes, a red-marked paper in an English class led him to reconsider his path. An impulsive call to inquire about the cosmetology program resulted in an immediate enrollment, thanks to Kay Swanner, the program coordinator at the time. "I thought I would try it for a semester, and if I didn’t like it, I would just try something else. The rest is history—11 years later," Jacob reflects.

"They nurtured and mentored me into being better. Any success I have, I take back to Kay and Brandy."

Brandy Brock, current SCC cosmetology program coordinator and past instructor to Jacob, shares, "Jacob's transformation from a lively student to a compassionate and renowned stylist and mentor is truly inspiring. His love for Jesus and the Cosmetology industry has not only brought him success, but he has also positively impacted many lives. His leadership, kindness, and skill make him a true gem in the industry." She adds, "He is not only one of my former students but has become one of my dearest friends."

Kay Swanner, current Department Chair of Business & Professional Services and past cosmetology program coordinator when Jacob was in school, recalls, "Once Jacob started working on the lab floor, we witnessed the natural talent he possessed in the art of hairdressing. Most importantly, he genuinely cared about his clients. He would welcome them with smiles, hugs, and sometimes even a song. It would be an understatement to say that his clients adored him. As someone once said, 'First a psychologist and then a cosmetologist.' This is the best way I could describe Jacob. His talent and compassion have contributed to his success. I am incredibly proud of Jacob."

He worked as a stylist, owned his own salon, and eventually became a national master colorist and educator for J Beverly Hills, a prestigious role that has taken him across the country. His recent work at the 2024 Stagecoach Music Festival in California, styling high-profile social media influencers, highlights his professional achievements.

Reflecting on his journey, Jacob shares, "It's humbling to think a little ole' Kentucky bumpkin from London, KY., is now doing hair in LA." His work has brought him in contact with celebrities and influencers, such as Pookie, Monica Sims, Victoria Marquez, and Morgan Stiles.

Jacob's advice to future stylists emphasizes hard work and specialization. "Dig in and trust your instructors. Find three things and make yourself an expert at those. Establish your work ethic now, and plan to put in the time to hone your skill." He also shares a guiding principle from Proverbs: "If you delight yourself in the Lord, he will direct your path."

In addition to his professional success, Jacob remains actively involved in the community. He serves on the board of the Kentucky Horse Association, shows Tennessee walking horses at a national level, and participates in charitable events like the Kids Christmas program organized by the Laurel Cosmetology program.

Jacob plans to continue his work as an educator with J Beverly Hills and is open to new opportunities, including platform work. "For now, I’m enjoying all of the traveling, meeting new people, and teaching stylists all over the nation," he says. Jacob's journey is a testament to the enduring connections formed at SCC. His former instructors, now close friends, continue to play a significant role in his life. "Kay and Brandy are close friends now. I even get to do their hair sometimes," he says, highlighting the lasting bonds formed through education and mentorship.
