A Pulaski County student has been named the recipient of the Somerset Community College
(SCC) Emerging Student Leader Award for October, 2014. Dino d Melgoza of Somerset
was named the recipient of the award, sponsored by SCCs Student Government Association
(SGA) and presented to students who serve as campus leaders and role models.
Melgoza, a native of California, is currently completing his Associate of Arts degree
in Business Administration, with plans to transfer to a four-year institution. He
has served as president of SCCs Multicultural Club for the past two years. Under his
leadership, the organization received the campus impact award for the diversity, multiculturalism
and inclusion in 2014 and was a finalist for the 2014 Presidents Cup Award, the top
award presented to SCC student organizations. Melgoza served as the SGA delegate from
the Somerset campus in 2013-2014 and is presently serving as the SGA student coordinator.
He is also a member of the Gay-Straight Alliance.
Dino is an exception individual, states Ron Meade, sponsor for the SGA. I have known
many exceptional students here at the college, but few with the work ethic Dino displays.
I have never known of him not to accept responsibility when asked and he is most efficient.
He is passionate about causes that embrace diversity and is most deserving of this
Melgoza and his wife Penny have two children, Dominic and Lucas. He is scheduled to
graduate from SCC with a degree in business administration in 2016, with plans to
transfer at that time.
