SCC presents 2010 Diversity Awards

Elaine Wilson, Director of Cultural Diversity for Somerset Community College, presented the 2010 SCC Diversity Awards at the Annual Fall Convocation on August 4.This is the third year that members of the faculty and staff of SCC were recognized for their commitment to advance diversity of thought, culture, gender and ethnicity. This can be through service, curricular, and/or programming activities regarding racial, ethnic or gender diversity, disability, religion, national origin or other traditionally underrepresented groups. The 2010 Diversity Award Winners are: George Martinez, Tita Riggins, and Ron Meade.

George Martinez has been the Director of the SCC Governors Minority Student College Preparation Program for the past three years. Many minority students of various diverse backgrounds have been encouraged to consider SCC as their initial college experience. Martinez is a Psychology instructor on the SCC Somerset Campus.

Tita Riggins is originally from the Philippines and has been a very active member of the Diversity Initiatives Team and the International Festival Committee. She has made several presentations and provided exhibits on her country at various international celebrations at the Campuses and Centers. Riggins has also recruited various types of dancers for the International Festival, some preparing all year for the opportunity. Riggins works with Project BEAM at the SCC Russell Center.

He works tirelessly to increase the diversity of the applicant pool and students in the PTA program. He has assisted with the International Festival activities for the past three years and developed the international flag display located in the SCC grill. Each flag depicts the country that is represented by all the student body, staff and faculty.
