Back-to-School Edition: SCC recognizes four outstanding students as Students of the Month

Somerset Community College (SCC) is celebrating student achievement across both its Business and Professional Services and Health Sciences divisions by recognizing four exceptional students as Students of the Month for August and September. Honorees include Rebecca New, Jen Rose, Vincent Pruner and Chad Begley, whose dedication, perseverance, and commitment to their chosen professions exemplify the spirit of SCC.

Representing a diverse range of academic pathways, each student has demonstrated excellence both inside and outside the classroom while preparing for careers focused on creativity, education, healthcare and public service.

Rebecca New: Turning Passion into Purpose (Teacher Education Pathway)

August Business and Professional Services Student of the Month Rebecca New has balanced a full-time career, a small business, and a demanding academic schedule while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA through SCC's Teacher Education Program and the Western Kentucky University Cohort at Somerset.

New's journey reflects determination and resilience. While navigating personal challenges and pursuing her educational goals, she applied for more than 50 scholarships and earned approximately 10 awards to help make her college education attainable.

Currently serving as a Special Needs Assistant at Bell Elementary School in Wayne County, New gains valuable hands-on experience while strengthening her commitment to becoming an educator. Her dedication to student success and passion for serving others make her a standout representative of SCC's Teacher Education Program.

Jen Rose: A Commitment to Patient Care (Respiratory Therapy Program)

August Health Sciences Student of the Month Jen Rose, a Williamsburg native and graduate of Whitley County High School, is pursuing a degree in Respiratory Therapy and is expected to graduate in Spring 2027.

Rose describes the program as challenging but rewarding and has earned recognition for her academic excellence, clinical skills, leadership and professionalism. Faculty members also note her willingness to support classmates and her genuine commitment to patient care.

Through the SCC Respiratory Therapy Program, Rose is developing the knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to care for patients with cardiopulmonary conditions and make a difference in healthcare settings.

Vincent Pruner: Creativity Meets Consistency (Visual Communication Program)

September Business and Professional Services Student of the Month Vincent Pruner has distinguished himself in SCC's Visual Communications Program through his technical ability, attention to detail, and professional work ethic.

s an online student, Pruner has consistently demonstrated exceptional self-discipline by submitting assignments on time and producing high-quality work that reflects both creativity and professionalism. Faculty members praise his strong eye for design and ability to carefully follow project objectives while incorporating thoughtful visual solutions.

His success highlights the importance of reliability, consistency, and craftsmanship in preparing for a career in graphic design and related creative industries.

Chad Begley: Serving His Community (EMS-Paramedic Program)

September Health Sciences Student of the Month Chad Begley, a Bronston native and 2011 graduate of Southwestern High School, is pursuing his goal of becoming a paramedic after years of service in emergency medical care.

Begley began his EMS career with Somerset-Pulaski County EMS as an EMT before advancing to Advanced EMT and entering the Paramedic Program. He is actively involved with Somerset-Pulaski County EMS, Somerset-Pulaski County Rescue Squad, and the Bronston Fire Department while balancing work, coursework, clinical experiences and family responsibilities.

An Eagle Scout and dedicated public servant, Begley hopes to continue his education after graduation and eventually help train future EMS providers. His commitment to lifelong learning and serving others has made him a respected leader among his peers.

Celebrating Student Success

From future educators and creative professionals to respiratory therapists and paramedics, these four students represent the diverse talents and ambitions found throughout Somerset Community College. Their perseverance, leadership and dedication to serving others demonstrate the impact SCC students are making both on campus and in their communities.

As the college begins a new academic year, New, Rose, Pruner, and Begley serve as inspiring examples of how determination, hard work and a commitment to excellence can create opportunities for success in any field.
