Photo of SCC October Students of the MonthSomerset Community College (SCC) is proud to recognize four outstanding students as October Students of the Month for their academic achievement, perseverance, leadership, and commitment to their future careers. Honorees include Victoria Smith, Isaiah Strauel, Adam St. Pierre, and Nathan Houchens, who represent the diverse educational pathways and student success stories found across the college.

Victoria Smith: Pursuing a New Path in Cybersecurity

Victoria Smith, the Business and Professional Services Student of the Month, is pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity and plans to graduate in May 2027.

A graduate of Pulaski County High School, Smith chose cybersecurity because of her interest in technology, problem-solving, and protecting individuals and organizations from digital threats. As a first-generation college student, she made the decision to leave a successful healthcare management career to pursue a new professional path while balancing work and raising two children.

Currently employed by a home health agency, Smith hopes to continue her education by earning a bachelor's degree in cybersecurity while gaining valuable industry experience through internships.

"Somerset Community College has given me more than an education," Smith said. "It has given me the confidence to dream bigger, the courage to pursue a new career in cybersecurity, and the belief that I can build a better future for me and my family."

Isaiah Strauel: Serving Others Through Aviation

The Technical Programs Student of the Month, Isaiah Strauel, is enrolled in SCC's Aviation Maintenance program and expects to graduate in Fall 2027.

Originally from Liberty, Kentucky, Strauel developed a passion for aviation at an early age. Following graduation, he hopes to serve as a medical missionary pilot in Papua New Guinea, combining his love of aviation with a desire to help others.

A husband and father of two young children, Strauel balances family life with coursework, construction work, and responsibilities as a part-time Certified Flight Instructor. His long-term goals include serving as a bush pilot and rebuilding aircraft.

Strauel credits his faith and dedication to serving others as the driving force behind his educational and career aspirations.

Adam St. Pierre: Building a Future in Computer Science

Adam St. Pierre, the Arts and Sciences Student of the Month, is pursuing an Associate in Science degree and plans to transfer to the University of Kentucky to earn a bachelor's degree in Computer Science after graduating from SCC in Spring 2027.

Originally from Gonzales, Louisiana, and now residing in Jamestown, Kentucky, St. Pierre chose computer science because of his fascination with technology and its ability to solve real-world problems.

As a first-generation college student, St. Pierre has embraced opportunities to become actively involved on campus. He serves as a Math Peer Mentor and participates in the Math and Science Club, Phi Theta Kappa, and the MSSE Scholars Program.

"I'm grateful for my experience at SCC," St. Pierre said. "It's been incredible both inside and outside of the classroom. The opportunities I've had and the wonderful people I've met are things I'll always cherish."

Nathan Houchens: Turning Experience into a Career of Service

The Health Sciences Student of the Month, Nathan Houchens, is pursuing a degree in the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program and is expected to graduate in May 2027.

A graduate of Barren County High School, Houchens chose the PTA profession because of his desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. As a nontraditional student, he saw the program as an opportunity to begin a new career while combining his passion for helping people with an interest in health and rehabilitation.

While maintaining full-time employment, Houchens successfully balances the rigorous demands of the PTA program with family and personal responsibilities. Faculty members note that his determination, professionalism, and life experience contribute significantly to the classroom environment and exemplify the qualities of a future healthcare professional.

Houchens has also participated in activities associated with the American Physical Therapy Association and APTA Kentucky, further demonstrating his commitment to the profession.

Reflecting on his experience, Houchens said, "Going back to school as an older, nontraditional student has required me to balance school with family, work, and other responsibilities. The program has pushed me outside of my comfort zone and given me a much greater appreciation for the responsibility that comes with being a PTA."

Following graduation, he plans to become a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant and continue developing his skills while making a positive impact on the lives of his patients.

Celebrating Student Success

From cybersecurity and aviation maintenance to computer science and physical therapy, these four students exemplify the determination, resilience, and commitment to excellence that define the SCC student experience.

Their accomplishments highlight the transformative power of higher education and demonstrate how Somerset Community College helps students from all backgrounds achieve their educational and career goals.
