The Future of Healthcare is Coming to Russell County

Collage of different health programsSomerset Community College (SCC) is proud to announce a significant expansion of health sciences education at its Russell Center, bringing new career training opportunities to students across Russell County and surrounding communities beginning in 2027.

The expansion will introduce several in-demand healthcare credentials designed to prepare students for rewarding careers in Kentucky’s growing healthcare workforce.

Beginning in Spring 2027, SCC’s Russell Center plans to offer:

  • Diagnostic Medical Sonography AAS (Fall 2027) - an approximately two-year, selective-admissions program that prepares students for careers in diagnostic ultrasound, including obstetric/gynecologic and abdominal sonography. Launched at the London Campus in fall 2026, the program has expanded to Russell Springs, with synchronous instruction delivered across both locations. Future selective-admissions information will be available on the program webpage.
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) Technician Certificate - a short-term, bi-term credential that can be completed in approximately eight weeks and prepares students to perform electrocardiograms and develop skills in cardiac monitoring and rhythm recognition.
  • Entry Level Pharmacy Technology Certificate - a 16-week certificate designed to prepare students for entry-level pharmacy technician positions and national certification opportunities.
  • Phlebotomy Technician Certificate - a short-term credential that can be completed in approximately eight weeks and provides hands-on training in blood collection techniques and related clinical skills.

“This expansion is about creating opportunities for students to train for meaningful, high-demand careers without having to leave their community to do it,” said Regina Haugen, Administrator of SCC's Russell and Casey Centers. “At the same time, we are helping address a very real workforce need for healthcare providers throughout our region. It is exciting to see the Russell Center growing in a way that will have a lasting impact on both our students and the communities we serve.”

The addition of these programs marks a major investment in the future of healthcare education in Russell County. Students will have opportunities to gain hands-on training, develop industry-recognized skills, and prepare for careers that make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Spring 2027 enrollment is currently underway. Students and community members interested in learning more about programs available at the Russell Center may call the Center at 270-858-6510 or email regina.haugen@kctcs.edu for additional information.
