SCC names Billy Roberts 2026 Health Sciences Student of the Year
Somerset Community College (SCC) has named Billy Roberts, a Physical Therapist Assistant
student from Yeaddiss, Kentucky, as its 2026 Health Sciences Student of the Year,
recognizing his academic excellence, leadership, service, and determination.
For Roberts, the journey to this honor has involved much more than earning good grades. While pursuing his education, he has balanced the responsibilities of being a devoted husband and father, demonstrating that perseverance and commitment can lead to extraordinary achievements.
A 2013 graduate of Leslie County High School, Roberts has distinguished himself throughout his time at SCC. He has consistently earned recognition on both the Dean's List and the President's List, all while maintaining a busy family life and remaining actively engaged in campus and community activities.
As a student in SCC's Physical Therapist Assistant program, Roberts has embraced opportunities to serve others and grow professionally. He is an active member of the Physical Therapy Student Organization, has volunteered at health screenings for the Kentucky Special Olympics, and participates in the American Physical Therapy Association. He has also organized successful fundraisers benefiting the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research and is a member of the Omicron Zeta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
Faculty members say Roberts' commitment to excellence extends beyond academics. His willingness to serve others, support his classmates, and remain dedicated to his family while pursuing his educational goals made him a natural choice for the award.
"The PTA program has truly been transformative for me," Roberts said. "It challenges me to think critically, and the faculty are incredibly supportive in helping students grasp complex concepts. I wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone interested in this field."
Roberts credits much of his success to the support of his family and the encouragement he received from SCC faculty throughout his educational journey.
As he looks toward the future, Roberts plans to continue his education and pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. His determination to advance his career while remaining dedicated to his family serves as an inspiration to fellow students and exemplifies the spirit of Somerset Community College.
"Billy's story is one of perseverance, sacrifice, and service," said SCC Health Sciences faculty. "He has excelled academically, given back to his community, and remained committed to his family throughout his time at SCC. He truly represents the best of what it means to be a Somerset Community College student."
As SCC's 2026 Health Sciences Student of the Year, Roberts exemplifies the compassion, resilience, and commitment to lifelong learning that define the next generation of healthcare professionals.
