Somerset Community College welcomes new Director of Enrollment Management, Dr. John Hall

In March, Somerset Community College (SCC) welcomed its newest Director of Enrollment Management, Dr. John Hall.

Originally from Ashland in Eastern Kentucky, Dr. Hall deeply understands how education can empower Appalachian families and break generational cycles.

“What I love about this area is that it feels like home. Community colleges have a unique ability to create a big impact in smaller communities.”

While earning his bachelor’s degree in history at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY, Dr. Hall gained valuable experience in college admissions as a student worker.

His interest in recruitment strategies soon revealed his natural talent for college admissions. After graduating, Dr. Hall continued this work as an admissions counselor at his alma mater for three years, an unexpected yet rewarding path outside of his field of history.

“I got to know the people of Eastern Kentucky and saw firsthand how students there needed help navigating the college process. That experience sparked my passion for supporting students—not just getting them to college but helping them succeed once they’re here.”

Dr. Hall earned his Master’s in Higher Education Administration from the College of William & Mary in Virginia, where he supported student athletes in achieving academic success.
Seeking adventure, Dr. Hall worked for a semester-away program in New York, where he supported residential life, taught classes, and served as recruiting coordinator, traveling across the country.

Dr. Hall’s passion for community colleges developed during his graduate studies, when he recognized the vital mission of providing students with accessible, affordable education.
During his time as an academic advisor at a community college in North Carolina, Dr. Hall discovered his true calling and decided to pursue this work as a lifelong career.

Missing his Kentucky roots, Dr. Hall returned home and joined Gateway Community and Technical College (KCTCS) from 2018 to 2024 as an academic advisor, also overseeing transfer programs.
Dr. Hall then transitioned into a new role at Northern Kentucky University (NKU) with a stronger focus on data-driven admissions and student success initiatives, where he made a lasting impact through the implementation of emerging data-driven strategy tools now being widely adopted across higher education.

In 2024, Dr. Hall earned his Doctorate in Adult and Higher Education Leadership from Morehead State University. Through connections with SCC colleagues in his cohort, he became inspired by their leadership and envisioned SCC as a future workplace.

“Kentucky feels like home, and I love helping people here. I’m excited to explore new opportunities in this part of the state,” Dr. Hall shared.

Dr. Hall’s vision for SCC includes developing an ecosystem where every school and community in the region is aware of the opportunities available. “It’s my passion to help high school students explore local career pathways with employers and show them how they can achieve their goals at SCC—often at little or no cost thanks to financial aid or the Work Ready Scholarship.”

Dr. Hall aims to grow SCC’s partnerships, bringing new opportunities to everyone in the community.

“If you want training, a degree, a credential, or a job, SCC should be your first stop,” Dr. Hall said.

“Most importantly, once you’re here, we have everything you need to succeed, including using data proactively to anticipate student challenges and provide the right tools for success.”

“It’s not just about recruiting students—it’s about supporting them all the way to my favorite day of the year: graduation and celebrating all they’ve accomplished.”

Dr. Hall calls Northern Kentucky home, where he lives with his longtime partner, Madison, and their beloved dogs, Ellie and Scout. An avid outdoor enthusiast, he spends his free time hiking in state parks, connecting with the community and its history, and beginning each day with a commitment to running and fitness.

Within months of joining SCC, Hall spearheaded the launch of an innovative AI chatbot modeled after the college mascot, Pathfinder. Available around the clock, the chatbot can answer student questions, provide assistance after hours, and stay connected through personalized text message follow-ups.

“Dr. Hall has demonstrated exceptional initiative and has been a valuable addition to the SCC team. He has been actively engaged in developing new initiatives while also enhancing existing programs and processes,” SCC Provost Dr. Ron Meade said. “His leadership, innovation, and commitment have made a positive impact on both the college and the community. Dr. Hall is a significant asset to the institution, and we look forward to his continued contributions and the ongoing growth and success of his area."
