SCC Hosts Third Annual Giving Day to Fight Student Hunger and Financial Hardship

SCC Giving Day is April 22, 2026

Somerset Community College (SCC) is excited to announce its third Annual Giving Day taking place on April 22 in celebration of Community College Month.

“We are excited to join with our community, alumni and advocates to lend financial support to students facing financial hardships,” said SCC President Dr. Carey Castle. Funds will be used for need-based scholarships, re-stocking the food pantries, student emergency funds, and other needs to help our students complete their education.”

With many families continuing to face financial strain, the need for student support is more urgent than ever.  According to a recent KCTCS survey, food insecurity is a significant issue facing Kentucky’s community college students, with 23% reporting very low food security. By expanding access to nutritious food, the hope is to provide a supportive environment where students can thrive both academically and personally.

SCC student Michele Hensley, a recipient of the Betty Nelson Memorial Scholarship, shared how community-funded scholarships support her academic journey.

"As a full-time non-traditional student working and supporting my family, this scholarship helps ease the financial burden while I pursue my dream of becoming a paramedic."

Ashley, a student recipient of emergency funds, shares the impact SCC Emergency Funds have on students.

“As a student, it is comforting to know that there are people who care and are ready to offer guidance, encouragement and assistance during difficult times. The resources you provide help relieve stress and allow students like me to stay focused on our education and goals.”

SCC Respiratory Therapist student Susan tells her person story on how SCC is shaping her future.

"As a 51-year-old black woman preparing to graduate, this milestone is deeply personal. Walking the graduation stage represents sacrifice, resilience, and believing in myself even when things felt heavy. Knowing that people like you helped make this possible reminds me that I wasn't doing this alone."

SCC joins the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and the other 15 colleges in this 24-hour day of giving on April 22.

Individuals, businesses, and organizations can make a direct impact by supporting SCC students. Early giving is now open.
