Captain David Britt, a retired Delta Airlines captain and former Air Force C-141 pilot, brings decades of global flying experience to the program. “Our program at SCC is designed to take you from the basics all the way through to your instrument pilot certificate rating. We provide all the essential theoretical knowledge and then transition to practical, hands-on flight training. I'm passionate about sharing the expertise I've gained over my 40-year career, and I invite anyone interested in aviation to join us.”

The Fixed Wing Pilot Program, offered at the Somerset South Campus, is designed for flexibility to accommodate students from all backgrounds and stages of life. Among the inaugural class are James Gilley a retired Navy veteran pursuing his pilot’s license to assist with firefighting efforts, and Ben Hall, a young student who has dreamed of flying since childhood. Both have found a unique opportunity to fulfill their aspirations at SCC.

“My goal is to become a Delta Airlines pilot, and as a Somerset local, this program gives me the best opportunity to achieve that,” Hall said.

Gilley, an SCC AMT alum and business owner, had been trying to earn his pilot license since 1993 through other programs, but life commitments always got in the way. Now, he has found that the structure of SCC’s pilot program fits his lifestyle perfectly. With its focused aviation curriculum and no additional general education requirements, Gilley can fully dedicate his time to earning his pilot license.

Gilley also praised the instructors for their dedication to student success. “The instructor personally ensures that every concept is thoroughly understood before moving on. Unlike many other places, SCC truly cares about the quality of education their students receive,” he said.

Gilley plans to use his pilot license to assist with firefighting, water bombing, and other emergency services.

Whether students are interested in surveying, business aviation, emergency services, or other fields, the SCC pilot program provides valuable training for anyone looking to enter the aviation industry.

The curriculum begins with classroom instruction on essential aviation knowledge—including topics like computing pressure and wind direction—before transitioning to hands-on flight training. The streamlined program enables students to earn their pilot’s license in fewer semesters than traditional training methods.

SCC’s commitment to aviation education is further highlighted by its President & CEO, an Air Force veteran, Dr. Carey Castle, who recently earned his personal pilot’s license, bringing his passion for aviation to the forefront of the community’s educational offerings.

“At Somerset Community College, we are passionate about opening new doors for our students and providing opportunities that can transform lives and communities. As an Air Force veteran and someone who recently achieved my own pilot’s license, I know firsthand the value of aviation education,” Dr. Castle said. “This partnership and program represent our commitment to equipping students with the skills, confidence, and training needed to pursue their dreams. We are proud to help launch the next generation of pilots right here in Somerset.”

Interested individuals are invited to attend a Community Learn and Explore Forum on March 30, from 5–6 p.m. at the Somerset South Campus, Building #2, in the Aviation Hangar. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet instructors and discover how the program can help them take flight and achieve their dreams. Students can also register for the upcoming class starting on May 18, 2026.
