Michaela WaskoskyA dedicated student in the Somerset Community College (SCC) EMS-Paramedic Program, Michaela Waskosky from Columbia, has been honored as the SCC Health Sciences Division’s Student of the Month for September. This recognition positions her as a candidate for the distinguished Division’s Student of the Year Award, which is set to be announced in May 2026.

Paramedics play a crucial role in healthcare, responding to both emergent and non-urgent medical situations. They assess, triage, and provide essential care, utilizing advanced knowledge and skills to address patients' physiological, psychological, and psychosocial needs. Paramedics also interpret diagnostic findings to implement appropriate treatments and facilitate referrals to higher levels of care, working across various settings including emergency medical services, hospitals, and fire departments.

Michaela Waskosky, a graduate of Russell County High School, expressed her enthusiasm for the program, stating, “I would ten out of ten recommend this program to other students.” She praised the faculty's expertise and highlighted their strong emphasis on hands-on skills, affirming, “The program is of very high quality.”

Samantha Feldman, EMS-Paramedic Program Coordinator, noted, “Michaela stands out as an exceptional student in the SCC Paramedic Program. Her unwavering dedication to learning, strong clinical performance, and compassionate approach to patient care make her a role model among her peers.” She added, “Voted for this honor by her classmates, Michaela consistently demonstrates professionalism, a positive attitude, and a genuine passion for emergency medical services. Her ability to remain calm under pressure and her eagerness to support her classmates reflect the qualities of a strong student and a future leader in the field. Michaela is truly deserving of this recognition.”

In addition to her studies, Waskosky currently works as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at Adair County EMS. She credits her interest in the profession and her successes to the mentorship of her colleague and EMT instructor, Preston Gaskin. Michaela is on track to graduate with an Associate of Applied Science in EMS-Paramedic in May 2026 and is considering applying to a paramedic-to-nursing bridge program in the future.
