On Thursday, Somerset Community College (SCC) proudly hosted the Going Pro event at the Laurel Campus where students “signed” with local businesses, marking a significant milestone as they embark on their professional careers.
In the face of a national workforce shortage, SCC is committed to bridging the gap by equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in Kentucky's growing economy. According to SCC’s latest economic impact study, SCC has successfully supported over 2,800 jobs in the state and graduated more than 900 students within the 2023-2024 academic year in sectors critical to community development, such as healthcare, skilled trades, manufacturing, logistics, and business services.
SCC’s Provost Dr. Clint Hayes, emphasized the significance of the Going Pro event, stating, “This celebration highlights the synergy between our students' dedication and the workforce needs of our community. It’s a moment to recognize their achievements and reaffirm our mission to transform lives and strengthen our communities.”
The event featured a keynote speech by Paula Thompson Executive Director of London- Laurel Economic Development Authority, who congratulated the students for their commitment to becoming integral community members. She praised SCC for its collaboration with local businesses, vital in empowering community members to influence and enhance their environments through effective workforce development.
