Ashlee Simpson of Somerset received the award and is now a candidate for the Division’s Student of the Year Award, to be announced in May 2025.

Simpson had already completed a Bachelor of Science in biology from Midway University before enrolling in SCC’s Radiography Program. She is the recipient of the Horatio Alger Award, bestowed upon exceptional leaders who have triumphed over adversity to achieve greatness. She was home-schooled through eighth grade and lived in eighteen different states. She advocates for domestic violence victims and supports and empowers them.

The Radiography Program prepares graduates to become radiographers, offering training for administering ionizing radiation for medical diagnostic purposes. Graduates are prepared to take the American Registry of Radiologic Technology Examination. The curriculum is comprised of specialized courses in radiography along with concentrated studies in the basic sciences, mathematics and general education. Graduates may complete additional certifications in magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography.

The recommendation for Simpson’s award came from Program Director Randall Hammock and Director of Clinical Education Shanda Catron. “Ashlee is a great student who actively engages with the class and pursues excellence in her learning,” states Hammock. “She independently sought out scholarships and leadership opportunities in her community, showing her dedication, initiative and self-motivation. She is a stellar example for the radiography profession!”

“SCC has made me realize it’s possible to achieve so much more than I realized,” states Simpson. “The program has made me reach for the stars.”

Simpson is scheduled to graduate in May 2025 and plans to work as a Registered Radiologist Assistant. She was inspired by her father, Jeremy Simpson of Somerset, who also attended a radiography program, and her grandmother, Cinda Hagy of Grundy, Virginia, who made it possible for her to attend SCC.
