Capture Repetition in South-Central Kentucky: SCC’s Fruit of the Lens Photography Club’s 25th Exhibit looking for submissions

Published on Oct 16, 2024

Picture this: You’re walking in the woods and run across a sugar maple tree with just one tight cluster of brilliantly colored leaves remaining. Framed by the bare branches, this scene would make an excellent photograph.

Surveying south-central Kentucky to capture repetition for a fall photo exhibit will be the goal for members of Fruit of the Lens Photography Club. This is the 25th exhibit conducted by the Somerset Community College student club.

“Let me repeat myself!” is the theme of the show, according to SCC faculty advisor Professor Cindy Burton. “Repetition is a common technique used by photographers to create a sense of balance, rhythm and structure” Burton said.

She also noted that repeated items in the picture can involve almost anything. Examples include people, trees, lines, flowers, clouds, textures, buildings, or other visual elements.

“Photographers may also consider including an area that contrasts from the repetition,” Burton said. “This gives the image a focal point that draws the viewer’s attention.”

Another club advisor, Dr. Melissa Adams, said that entries to the exhibit will be accepted until Wednesday, Nov. 20 and that a premiere showing of the presentation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 26 at noon in the Rogers Student Commons Community Room on SCC’s Somerset Campus. All who submitted images to the exhibit, club members, students, and the general public are encouraged to attend this free showing.

While Fruit of the Lens Photography Club is an SCC student organization, anyone with an interest in taking digital images is invited to join and participate. To become a member, simply email Burton at cindy.burton@kctcs.edu and ask to be in the club.

“The main criterion for joining the club is just to enjoy taking photographs,” Adams said. She noted that members can use any type of camera, even the camera on their phone, for their submissions.

Additional information on the club is available on Facebook at “Fruit of the Lens Photography Club.” This page will also include links to past exhibits.
