“Imagine all the people” SCC International Festival welcomes community to celebrate together

person playing drumsSomerset Community College will host its annual Fall International Festival this week. The community will have two chances to experience this year’s “Imagine all the People” theme on October 16 (Wednesday) at the Laurel Campus and October 17 (Thursday) at the Somerset Campus.

Everyone in the community is welcome to experience the enriching, cultural and educational festival at one of the two SCC locations. Festival goers will be able to taste food from the Philippines, Greece and Cuba prepared by the SCC Culinary Arts Department.

man in cultural attire presenting at the festivalIn Somerset, Local Meece Middle School children will participate in the Parade of Nations led by bagpipers Bart Davidson and Jack Lewis. This will kick off our Festival at 9 a.m. in Somerset. Lewis and Davidson will share the background and legacy of bagpipes. The community has come together to celebrate all the people of the world. Displays from Kenya, Lake Cumberland Diversity Collective, PFLAG, KYNECT, Project BEAM, Devin Phelps, Pulaski County Homemakers Club, East/ West Karate and Seth Hart of the Wayne County Extension office.

students walking outside and holding international flagsSpecial activities in Somerset include Kentucky Humanities presentation: Nancy Green- Being Aunt Jemima, the Pancake Queen portrayed by Debra Faulk of Lexington, Chinese name writing with SCC’s Zhiming Xia, African drumming by Joan Brannon, and a presentation from Jim Embry who has just returned from the Terre Madre Convention in Italy and brings stories for all.

During the event catch cornhole, games and disc golf from SCC’s Student Government Association and SCC’s Fitness Center. From 11:30-1 take part in Karaoke hosted by James Taylor and fill the festival with the voices of our community.

Laurel campus will be filling its campus with color for all to experience from their Cosmetology Department’s fashion display. Enjoy African drumming from Joan Brannon a presentation from Venus Evans “Indian Citizenship Act of 924: 100 Years, The Struggle Continues.” Learn about Uganda from Katelyn Smith. Additionally, hear a presentation from Robert Spencer and Julie Howe called, “The Kite Runner: Afghanistan in Historical and Cultural Context.” Taste your way around the world with the SCC Culinary Arts Department. Enjoy all day events from PeaceCraft Merchandise, the Multicultural Club and Origami crafts from Active Minds.

The entire family is invited to these two community events celebrating all people of all nations. Join the celebrations this week. Each location’s celebration begins at 9 a.m.
