Kimberly Broughton of Barbourville received the award and is now a candidate for the Division’s Student of the Year Award, to be announced in May 2025.

Prior to her recent studies, Broughton completed SCC’s practical nursing program and currently works at Saint Joseph London. Program faculty report that this prior nursing experience enriches classroom discussions and that Broughton is consistently commended by clinical staff and patients for compassionate care and a patient-centered approach.

This innovative collaboration, believed to be the first of its kind in Kentucky, allows SCC to better meet the demands for nurses in eastern Kentucky while creating a pipeline for nurses to obtain a four-year nursing degree. The partnership, then, is mutually beneficial to both institutions.

SCC’s Health Sciences August Student of the Month award was recommended for Broughton by program Faculty Lindsey Garrett and Michelle Jones.

In their nomination letter, Garrett and Jones cite Broughton’s “leadership, work ethic, and willingness to support peers to make them feel like a valued member of the nursing community.” They go on to say that they have “no doubts that Kimberly will continue to achieve great success in their nursing career,” and that Broughton “embodies the qualities of the exceptional nurse and student.

No matter what age, you can always change what you want to be when you grow up…and this program has done just that for me!”

In December 2024, Broughton is scheduled to graduate from the ADN program and plans to further her education by obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Eastern Kentucky University. She and her husband have two children.
