At Somerset Community College (SCC), the 44th annual ceremony was held on April 15 to recognize local students' academic excellence through Mu Alpha Theta.

Mu Alpha Theta is the national high school and two-year college mathematics honor society. It is dedicated to inspiring interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarships in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students.

Students in Mu Alpha Theta get to be mentored by professionals in the Math and Science field.

Debra House, Professor of Physics, and Kathy Lewis, Professor of Mathematics, are the current Mu Alpha Theta advisors at SCC.

Current Mu Alpha Theta members graduating in Spring 2024 were honored at the meeting. They include Fletcher Bowers, John Combs, Nathaniel de Robles, Allyson Holman, Patriya Murray, Elle Ritchey, Gavin Slone, and Jacob West.

The ceremony had two keynote speakers in honor of sending off the newest Mu Alpha Theta graduates among the newest honor society members.

Dr. Jessica Caffee Hamm and Dr. Corey Hamm graduated from Southwestern High School in 1998, received an associate in science degree from SCC in 2001, and earned her doctoral degree in dental medicine from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 2007. At Somerset Community College, she was an active Math/Science Club College member, served as the Math/Science Club-Mu Alpha Theta President, and was initiated into the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society.

Dr. Corey Hamm graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 2014 after serving in the United States Air Force for ten and a half years. He completed his undergraduate degree in Professional Aeronautics at Embry-Riddle. He took coursework in biology and chemistry at SCC before being admitted to the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.

SCC students who excel in mathematics were recently inducted into the Mu Alpha Theta National Mathematics Honor Society.

New 2024 initiates include Jacob Anderson, Malachi Anderson, Zachary Brown, Caden Bryant, Connor Denney, Ian Dunlap, Austin Dykes, Marcus Howard, Charles Scott, Lyndsey Spillman, and Jacob West.

Nearly a dozen students participating in the ceremony were honored as Math and Science Scholars of Excellence: Zachary Brown, Caden Bryant, Connor Denney, Ian Dunlap, Marcus Howard, Lyndsey Spillman, Jacob West, John Combs, Nathaniel de Robles, Allyson Holman, and Patriya Murray.

To be eligible for Mu Alpha Theta honors, a student must have had at least one course at or above the pre-calculus level or a combination of algebra and trigonometry, a 3.5 overall grade point average in all two-year college mathematics courses at or above the college algebra and trigonometry/precalculus level and a 3.3 cumulative grade point average in all classes.

"Mrs. House and I are very proud of these students. It has truly been a privilege and honor to be a part of their educational journey at Somerset Community College," Lewis said. "We continue to be inspired by their accomplishments and participation in the SCC academic community."
