Health Sciences May Student of the Month, Laura BastinA student enrolled in her final year of studies in the Somerset Community College (SCC) Associate Degree Nursing Program has been named the recipient of the SCC Health Sciences Division's Student of the Month for May. Laura Bastin of Dunnville received the award and is now a candidate for the Division's Student of the Year Award, which will be announced in May 2024.

SCC offers the Associate Degree Nursing Program on the Somerset and Laurel Campuses and on the Eastern Kentucky University-Manchester Campus. It also provides a bridge program for licensed practical nurses at the Somerset Campus and McCreary Center. Bastin attends the traditional day program on the Somerset Campus. SCC has partnerships with four-year institutions, including Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky, for graduates who want to pursue an advanced degree.

The Associate Degree Nursing Program prepares graduates to use their skills and knowledge to fulfill the nurse's role, enhance human flourishing, demonstrate sound nursing judgment, continually develop a professional identity and possess a spirit of inquiry to improve the quality of patient care.

Bastin, a survivor of thyroid cancer, is highly respected by her peers. She was elected to serve as a class student representative and is planning the program's pinning ceremony. She has participated in several community service projects, including free flu clinics and blood pressure screenings.

"Laura has had a positive attitude throughout the program and is an encouragement to everyone," states program faculty Elizabeth Herren. "She always has a smile on her face whenever I see her."

Bastin reports that her experiences at SCC have been positive. "I really cannot say enough good things about this program. I have had a support team rallying behind me at all times, and the faculty truly cares. I recommend this program highly to anyone."

Bastin is the daughter of Jason and Misty Bastin, also of Dunnville, and is engaged to be married to Bailey Jones. She is in her final year of studies and is scheduled to graduate in May 2024. She will be working in the emergency room at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
