SCC Photography Club showcases Appalachia through their lenses and seeks participants for the Spring exhibit coming soon

Published on Apr 3, 2024

From churches to barns to homesteads to the Kidder Store and Post Office, these images of "Appalachian Architecture" set the theme for the spring exhibit of Somerset Community College's Fruit of the Lens photography club.

Members of the club and guests gathered on the Somerset Campus on March 28 to view the premiere of the exhibit. The video presentation lasts less than 15 minutes and can be seen on YouTube by searching for "Appalachian Architecture photo exhibit, Spring 2024."

Shawna Kindrick, student president of the club, was one of 14 club members to submit photos to this, the club's 24th exhibit since 2012.

The digital photographs submitted "highlighted the beauty and diversity of structures in south-central Kentucky," said faculty advisor Professor Cindy Burton.

Original music for the exhibit was again provided by the group "Alias" from their critically acclaimed, self-titled 1978 album. Wayne County native Steve Vire, who was a member of the central-Kentucky music group, gave the club permission to use the music. The other members are Charlie Everett and Richard Nash.

Like many who attended the premiere, long-time club member and exhibitor Denny Longsworth praised the group's music and how well it complemented the images. He said that the tight harmonies and stellar guitar play reminded him of the Grammy Award-winning band "America."

Burton noted that while the club is a student organization, it's not exclusive to photographers associated with SCC and that several community members submitted images for the exhibit.

Besides SCC students, staff and faculty, anyone in the community with an interest in taking digital images is invited to join and participate. To become a member, email Burton and ask to be in the club.

"The main criterion for joining the club is just to enjoy taking photographs," Burton said. She noted that members can use any camera, even the camera on their phone, for their submissions.

The spring exhibit also featured the group's new logo, based on a design concept by SCC alumnus David Hoard. Now a graphic designer with Magic Monograms in Somerset, Hoard recommended a design that better reflects the club's diversity and connection with the community.
