Published on Feb 1, 2024
A student enrolled in first-year studies in the Somerset Community College Radiography
Program has been named the recipient of the SCC Health Sciences Division’s Student
of the Month for February. Alex Lofton of Campbellsville received the award and is
now a candidate for the Division’s Student of the Year Award, to be announced in May
2024.
Highly respected by his peers, Lofton was selected to serve as class representative to SCC’s Health Sciences Student Advisory Group and is a member of SCC’s Radiography Student Organization.
SCC’s two-year Radiography Program prepares graduates to administer ionizing radiation for medical diagnostic imaging purposes. Radiographers may find employment in hospitals, health clinics and physician’s offices and are considered high-wage, high-demand workers. In addition to the degree program, SCC offers certificates in advanced imaging in radiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.
Lofton was recommended for the award by Program Director Randall Hammock and Director of Clinical Education Shanda Catron. “Alex is a leader of the class and has great interpersonal skills,” states Hammock. “He has a great personality and puts others at ease. He will be an asset to our profession.”
Lofton reports that he has enjoyed his SCC experience. “My classmates have formed a great, supportive team and we provide each other with so many opportunities to learn,” he states. “We push each other to be excellent.”
Lofton is a first-year student and is scheduled to graduate in May 2025. He plans to be a travel radiologic technologist after graduation.
