Somerset Community College celebrates Dr. MLK, Jr. with community Unity Breakfast

On January 12, the Community came together for a special Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Breakfast at Somerset Community College(SCC) in the Meece Auditorium at SCC Somerset.

Patty Cundiff, Richard Cundiff, Elaine Wilson, and Clarence CundiffThe cherished community event for the first time had a special sponsor. Richard and Patty Cundiff and his son Clarence Cundiff. They made a special gift from the Cundiff Family Trust in memory of Paul Wilson, the late husband of Elaine Wilson, SCC Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Richard and Paul were friends and graduated together from Somerset High School (SHS) in 1961.The Cundiff family and SHS Class of 1961 presented Elaine with a plaque in honor of Paul’s memory at the Unity Breakfast.

Wilson has been spearheading the Dr. MLK, Jr. events at SCC for many years.

2024’s Unity Breakfast hosted special community leaders in the Pulaski County Government, local law enforcement and the Mayor of Somerset Alan Keck.

Over 150 registered for the event and enjoyed a breakfast spread prepared by SCC’s Culinary Arts Department.

Rev. Norman Franklin giving a speech at the Unity BreakfastRev. Norman Franklin gave a bold inspirational speech in the spirit of Dr. King, his legacy and the vision he had for America. The special reading of Dr. King served as a reminder of the unifying dream Dr. King had for our world. Rev. Franklin spoke on how that should look in today’s world.

Rev. Norman Franklin is an ordained Baptist minister, a U.S. Air Force Veteran, a writer for over five newspaper publications with a book in the works, and retired VP/CFO of the Urban League of Lexington after a 37-year career.

“We have been blessed to have enjoyed enthusiastic and gracious audiences over the years and we are truly grateful for their support,” Wilson said.
