Published on Jan 8, 2024
A recent graduate of the Somerset Community College Practical Nursing Program has been named the recipient of the SCC Health Sciences Division’s Student of the Month for January. Stephanie Lamb of Mount Vernon received the award and is now a candidate for the Division’s Student of the Year Award, to be announced in May.
Highly respected by her peers, Lamb was unanimously chosen to serve as class representative. She received an award for academic achievement and was selected the recipient of the “Outstanding Student Nurse Award” by her peers. She has worked at Baptist Health – Richmond as a patient care aide while enrolled in the program and continues to work there after graduation.
SCC’s Practical Nursing Program prepares students to practice within the legal scope of practical nursing under the supervision of a registered nurse or physician. SCC offers a bridge program for practical nursing diploma graduates to obtain the associate degree in nursing. SCC’s nursing program has been recognized at state and regional levels for its excellence and many graduates have gone on to obtain advanced degrees in the discipline. Nursing is a high-wage, high-demand profession.
Lamb was recommended for the award by program faculty member Carol Price. Price reports that Lamb is a “top student in the lecture, lab and clinical” portions of the program and was academically amongst the top in her class.
Lamb graduated with a diploma from the SCC Practical Nursing Program in December, 2023, and plans to work in the field of medical-surgical nursing. Her mother, Barbara Graves, has worked at Rockcastle Regional Hospital for 37 years, with the last 27 years being in a nursing role. She is married to Brandon Lamb and the couple is presently in the process of building a new home with their children Branson, Landon and Oaklee, with a fourth child due in August.
