Somerset Community College (SCC) Cosmetology students held their annual Christmas fundraiser this year. The three Cosmetology programs (Laurel, Clinton and Somerset locations) collectively raised over $10,000.

Laurel costmetology club students with wrapped giftsThe Laurel Campus Cosmetology Club raised over $5,000 through their annual Operation Kids fundraiser to provide Christmas gifts for Rockcastle County High School students in need.

The school resource center chose the children. They each received clothes, coats, shoes, blankets, a food basket, and hygiene products, among other things that they asked for. Many SCC faculty and staff donated money or shopped for a child.

Santa with Clinton Cosmetology students and the chosen childrenThe cosmetology students at the Clinton Center sponsored nine children from Clinton County Elementary School. The chosen children spent the day with the SCC students, had donuts, made crafts, watched a movie, and had happy meals. Santa made a surprise appearance bearing a stocking for each child.

Somerset cosmetology students with the gifts for local rehab facilitiesSomerset Campus Cosmetology students chose their holiday initiative to serve local rehab facilities, Lake Cumberland Recovery and Sky Hope.

The ladies in treatment at the rehab facilities enjoyed a spa day where SCC students completed manicures, pedicures, haircuts, facials, and waxing services for over 60 women over three days.

The women were also served breakfast and lunch and received gifts purchased by the SCC cosmetology department.

Somerset received thank-you notes from some of the women they served.

One of the cards Cosmetology received after the event read, “Thank you, you were all so kind. You all made me feel like I was normal and cared for. The food was great! The haircut was awesome. At a time in my life when I feel less than, you all made me feel good. Thank you for all the gifts from someone who doesn’t have anyone. I’m greatly appreciative.”

Brandy Brock, the program coordinator of the SCC Cosmetology program, said the event is a blessing to her, the students, and the faculty and staff at SCC.

“Giving back to the community is one of my passions, and I feel that exposing my Cosmetology students to this type of community service is a life-changing experience,” Brock added.
