SCC announces new Health Science Technology (HST) program launching Spring 2024

Somerset Community College (SCC) is proud to announce the next opportunity for those seeking a career in healthcare and health-related services.

Health Science Technology (HST) is the newest pathway students can take to gain a diverse skillset for a career in multiple areas of the healthcare field.

The HST program is designed for students who seek entry-level jobs in the health field as well as for currently employed individuals wishing to broaden their skills for career enhancement.

In just four semesters and two summer terms, the HST student will choose three distinct health science certificates out of 15 options at SCC. They have the freedom to personalize their educational experience to reach their career goals. Students ultimately earn three certificates and an Associate of Applied Science Degree.

Due to the requirements of completing three or more certificates in the health industry for the HST program, completion of the degree allows the graduate to serve in various roles within the healthcare industry.

Certificate options include Electrocardiograph Technician, Electronic Health Records Specialist, Emergency Medical Services (Paramedic), Emergency Medical Technician, Entry-level Pharmacy Technology, Hospital Admission Specialist, Kentucky Medication Aide, Medical Coding, Medical Office Admin Assistant, Medical office Insurance Billing and Coding, Medical Receptionist, Medical Scribe/ Transcriptionist, Medical Unit Coordinator, Nursing Assistant/ Medical Nurse Aid and Phlebotomy for the Health Care Worker.

The Bureau of Labor and Statistics has projected the employment of healthcare workers to grow significantly from 2021-2031.

At a time when healthcare workers are highly needed in our society, the new HST program at SCC will provide job opportunities in our community and fill in some gaps in our local healthcare facilities.
