December Health Sciences Student of the Month: Jarrett Belt, Medical Assisting StudentA student currently enrolled in first-year studies in the Somerset Community College (SCC) Medical Assisting Program has been named the recipient of the SCC Health Sciences Division’s Student of the Month for December. Jarrett Belt of London, KY received the award and is now a candidate for the Division’s Student of the Year award, to be announced in May 2024.

Belt has already completed certifications in nurse aide, CPR and AED at SCC before being admitted to the medical assisting program and is working as a nurse aide and phlebotomist while enrolled in the program. He is active in his church, serving as song leader and custodian, and is active in community service projects, including Children’s Miracle Network and local food pantries.

Medical assistants serve as vital liaisons between physicians and patients and play an important role in diagnosis and treatment. Program graduates work in a variety of settings, including administrative offices, examining rooms, and physician’s laboratories. The many different roles assumed in this unique profession assure a fast-paced, challenging career. SCC’s Medical Assistant Program had a 100% pass rate on the 2023 national certification examination. Their graduates are in high demand.

Belt was recommended for the award by program faculty members Debra Elam and Tina Meier. They cite Belt’s work ethic, professional behaviors and desire to grow and succeed as reasons for his nomination. “Jarett is a natural leader and is a person always doing his best to serve others,” states program director Debra Elam. “He is hard-working, responsible and encouraging to others, with set goals and a vision for his future.”

Belt is expected to graduate with a diploma from the SCC Medical Assisting Program in December 2024, with plans to work in a pediatric setting and ultimately acquire a degree in nursing. He is the son of Edward and Candace Belt of London.
