Somerset Community College Announces Two Scholarship Recipients

Two scholarships have been awarded to two Pulaski County students to attend Somerset
Community College for the fall 2023-2024 academic year. 1. Hailey Layne, recipient
of the Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship, and 2. Lucas Childers, recipient
of the Lillie Thorne Spradlin Memorial Scholarship.
Hailey Layne has been awarded the Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship to attend Somerset Community College (SCC). Layne is a 2023 graduate of Somerset Christian School where she graduated with a 3.9 GPA. She also is an active member of Potters Place Church. Layne is the daughter of Kendra Bishop and Shannon Layne of Somerset, KY.
The Somerset-Pulaski County Chamber of Commerce Scholarship was established in 2013 to create ongoing scholarship opportunities for recent graduates of an accredited high school in Pulaski County.
Layne stated, “I plan to work my way through the nursing program. I feel like God has placed a calling on my life to be the hands and feet of Jesus and I don’t see any better way to answer that calling than to literally help people’s hands and feet. Additionally, SCC is close to home and has great opportunities!”
Lucas Childers has been selected as the recipient of the Lillie Thorne Spradlin Memorial Scholarship to attend SCC. Childers is a 2023 Somerset High School graduate where he played football for four years and was named team captain his senior year. Childers is the son of Jason and Jessica Childers of Somerset, KY.
The Lillie Thorne Spradlin Memorial Scholarship was established in 1984 by Dr. Marion C. Spradlin in memory of his wife. This 12-credit-hour tuition scholarship is awarded to a high school graduate from Pulaski County.
Childers stated, “I plan to go to Somerset Community College to find a career path that I love. I chose SCC because it is close to home and affordable.”
The scholarships awarded to these students are made possible through the generosity of donors and organizations who believe in investing in the education and future of our community's brightest talents. SCC remains committed to providing opportunities for students to pursue their academic goals and fulfill their potential.
