SCC Theatre invites public to a fun sing-a-long event
It’s rare when you get a chance to take part in the sing-a-long of a world premiere musical, but Somerset Community College’s Theatre & Film Department is giving community members the chance to do just that!
Anyone who enjoys singing is invited to take part in a sing-a-long for the upcoming fall production of the original musical, All the Boys Love Mary, on May 9 at 7 p.m. The sing-a-long will take place in SCC’s Stoner Little Theatre. Attendees can obtain a link to the sheet music for the event by contacting SCC’s Theatre Director, Steve Cleberg at Steve.Cleberg@kctcs.edu.
The sing-a-long is a great way to prepare for auditions for the November 2017 production, but those who simply want to participate for fun are also welcome to join.
A recording of the finale of the musical, which is made up of reprises of Irving Berlin’s “You’d Be Surprised,” ”You Cannot Make Your Shimmy Shake on Tea” and the title number “All the Boys Love Mary,” will be created from the talent who participate in the event. Leading the participants in the performance is the production’s music director, Theresa Jean Kibby.
All the Boys Love Mary takes place in New York City in 1921. It was the era of the Prohibition; speak-easies and bathtub gin were commonplace. The musical follows the story of the street grafter, Bill Patterson, and his timid sidekick, Johnny Cohen, as they set out for a night on the town.
While the musical is an original, the songs are old-time American favorites. The array of colorful characters move their stories along with such classics as “April Showers,” “Ain’t We Got Fun” and “Second Hand Rose.” It also features such lively numbers as “Everybody Wants the Keys to My Cellar,” “If You Knock the L out of Kelly,” “Gasoline Gus and His Jitney Bus” and, of course, the title song “All the Boys Love Mary.”
SCC Theatre Director Steve Cleberg, buoyed by the success of his musical Tin Pan Alley Tavern, decided to use the same combination of public domain songs of the early twentieth century with lively stories of the people who made up the culture of that era. He will also bring together the winning team of Kibby and Leann Perlowski to serve as music director and choreographer for the production.
SCC Theatre has been developing All the Boys Love Mary for its November of 2017 world premiere all year. The book of the musical is now complete and the songs are ready for the audition and rehearsal process. The recording that will be made at the sing-a-long will be the final step in the year-long process.
Auditions for All the Boys Love Mary are slated for mid-August. The production will run two weekends, November 9-11 and November 16-18 in Stoner Little Theatre, located on the SCC Somerset Campus at 808 Monticello Street in Somerset.
