In his job with Eastman Chemical Company, Joshua Hayes, is working to solve the issues of waste plastics through revolutionary recycling technology. But it's his understanding of Somerset Community College (SCC) that brings him to the podium as the college's 2022 commencement speaker. SCC will hold graduation ceremonies on Friday, May 6, at The Center For Rural Development. Commencement exercises will begin at 7:30 p.m. EST, and SCC's Alum Josh Hayes will be the keynote speaker.

And while this camaraderie makes the gatherings fun, what brings them together is something a bit more academic--math and science.

SCC Phi Theta Kappa society induction ceremony group photoOver its first 53 years in service to the students of Somerset Community College (SCC), the Omicron Zeta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society was nothing if not consistent, bringing new, high-achieving students into the fold twice a year every year through the first two months of 2020. But as with most organizations and institutions across the country, Omicron Zeta saw its operations derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in March of that year.

Freddie Roy and his 21-year-old grandson, Kaleb Roy, are both students at Lake Cumberland Regional College and Workforce Center taking welding classes with Somerset Community College.Freddie Roy is 69-year-old farmer who has also been a bus driver with Russell County Schools for 44 years. Now, thanks to his grandson, he's trying something completely new--being a college student.

Jessalyn Burton was awarded the Spring 2022 John T Smith Scholarship to attend Somerset Community College (SCC). Burton is a 2021 graduate of Rockcastle County High School. Alyssa Emmett completed her GED in 2012 and has been awarded the Spring 2022 Leora Prewitt Memorial Scholarship to attend Somerset Community College. Emmett is currently seeking a dual major for Visual Communications with a multi-media focus and video production.

Somerset Community College’s Fruit of the Lens photography club is asking members to select the topic for their spring exhibit.

A survey with 10 possible exhibit themes will be sent to club members during February, according to club president Makayla Scott, and the topic getting the most votes will be announced the first week of March.

Jerry Starns, Chairman of the American Woodmark Foundation; Greg Ridge, Instructor, Wayne County Skills U; and Cindy Clouse, Executive Director of the SCC Foundation.The American Woodmark Foundation recently presented a gift to the Somerset Community College (SCC) Foundation to support the Adult Education Program-Skills U in Wayne County. The funds will be used to assist students with paying the GED (General Educational Development) testing fees.

College Navigator helping student in learning commons.Somerset Community College has been awarded a grant for $1.07 million. The funds will allow SCC to hire four new positions that assist rural students attending select programs at SCC with technological, financial, and extra academic support.
