SCC Alumna Shares Her Tale of Empowering the Disabled

angela ray rodgersSomerset Community College (SCC) has produced countless graduates who have gone on to achieve great things after leaving the institution, and one such alumna is an advocate for people with disabilities and special needs. Her name is Angela Ray Rodgers, and she has made it her mission to empower individuals with disabilities to reach their full potential.

After graduating from SCC, Angela continued her education at Eastern Kentucky University before becoming a middle school science teacher. 

Angela's passion for helping those with disabilities was fueled when her daughter Grace Anna was born with a rare form of dwarfism called Conradi Hunermann Syndrome. 

"She's had a lot of health issues and my plans of being a teacher the rest of my life were changed," said Angela. "So now I spend my day being an advocate for people with special needs, homeschooling my daughter, and writing books to inspire others to look at people with disabilities in a different light."

Angela, a native of Liberty, Ky., is married to Jeff and has two children - Isaiah and Grace Anna. Following the birth of Grace Anna her plans drastically shifted. Angela moved from being a veteran science teacher to an advocate for disability rights in addition to participating in various charitable organizations related with veterans' causes.

On her journey as an advocate for people with intellectual and physical disabilities, she wrote the heartwarming story of her daughter in Grace Anna Sings. Angela is part of various programs that help people with disabilities. She and Grace Anna travel the world inspiring others.

"SCC has given me a better life not only through education in courses that helped me take care of my daughter, help me teach my students, and help me be a better person SCC also instilled in me a feeling of positivity that I can do it," said Angela. 

SCC is a public community college in Somerset, Kentucky. It is part of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). The college offers academic, general education, and technical curricula leading to certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees.
