CALL TO ORDER
Chair Harris called the meeting of the Somerset Community College Board of Directors to order at 12:59 p.m. She welcomed everyone in attendance and thanked Ms. Alesa Johnson, Vice President of Workforce Solutions, for the tour and for hosting the meeting at the Valley Oak Center.
ACTION ITEM: October 26, 2023 MINUTES
Ms. Kelly Johnson announced that the minutes of the October 26, 2023 meeting were included in the agenda booklet and the book was mailed to Board Members in advance of the meeting. Mr. Brown moved the minutes to be approved as distributed. Mr. Duncan seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved.
PRESIDENT’S REMARKS
Dr. Castle shared an update on the enrollment status of Somerset Community College, highlighting an increase compared to the previous year and improvements in enrollment goals.
Dr. Castle provided an update on developments within KCTCS, announcing the appointment of Dr. Ryan Quarles as the fourth System President. Dr. Quarles attended the PLT meeting last week and there was much discussion on the future of KCTCS.
LAUREL SOUTH DISCUSSION
Dr. Castle provided an update on SCC's Laurel South Campus which is equivalent to the Somerset South Campus, both campuses offer and house the technical programs. However, the building was constructed in the 60s and needs updating in order to efficiently serve the faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Castle shared some of the ideas and funding possibilities that are currently being discussed to address this issue.
SACSCOC UPDATE
Dr. Bruce Gover, Vice President of Institutional Effectiveness, provided an overview of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Fifth Year Interim Report. He explained the areas that are evaluated in the report, how it differs from the decennial report, and who is responsible for developing it. The report is due on September 8, 2024, and the College is pursuing 8 key milestones to complete it.
ADJOURNMENT
Chair Harris announced the next meeting will be on Thursday, May 9, 2024. Chair Harris invited the Board and guests to drive over to the SCC Lineman Center for a tour of that facility. Ms. Wilburn made a motion to adjourn and with no further business, the members were dismissed at 1:36 PM.
