CALL TO ORDER

Chair Harris called the meeting of the Somerset Community College Board of Directors to order at 1:01 P.M. She welcomed everyone in attendance.

Chair Harris welcomed the new Board of Directors Mr. Larry VanHook and Ms. Whitney Wilburn. She also recognized and expressed gratitude to former board members Mr. Marshall Todd and Dr. Allison Cherry who served the Board since 2017. Napier and Cherry did not attend the meeting but will be presented a token of appreciation at a later time.

ACTION ITEM: July 27, 2023 Minutes

Ms. Johnson announced that the minutes of the July 27, 2023 meeting were included in the agenda booklet and the book was mailed to board members in advance of the meeting. Mr. Arnett moved the minutes to be approved as distributed. Mr. Napier seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved.

ACTION ITEM: FY 2023-2024 Operating Budget Request

Chair Harris called on Ms. Jill Meece, VP of Administration, to present the FY 2023-2024 Operating Budget as presented in the booklet. Mr. Arnett made a motion to approve the budget as presented. Mr. Napier seconded the motion. The 2023-2024 Operating Budget was approved unanimously.

PRESIDENT’S REMARKS

Dr. Castle reported college updates to the Board. SCC has celebrated many retirements and promotions which required some organizational changes. Enrollment numbers are increasing for the College and SCC continues to use 4DX, the four disciplines of execution by Franklin Covey, to meet College and Personnel goals.

Dr. Castle updated the Board on KCTCS updates. The KCTCS HURON Project is a long-term project that assesses 5 key areas of the colleges and system. Recently twelve recommendations have been made to KCTCS and have been distributed to all sixteen Colleges. KCTCS continues its Presidential search.

Dr. Castle called on Dr. Clint Hayes, Vice President of Academic Affairs to report changes in the Academic Support area. Dr. Hayes reported that the College is taking a close look at online learning processes, training, and quality assurance plan that helps support online learning and its students. SCC is also looking at program offerings and looking for ways to expand by adding new programs or partnering with universities to make transferring classes seamless. The College also received two grants (RPED and RAISE) to help support the College. This gives the College an opportunity to raise awareness about SCC in the community and help students navigate college and increase the retention rate.

ADJOURNMENT

Chair Harris appointed a nominating committee for next year’s officers Mr. BJ Brown, Mr. Gary Napier, and Mr. Jonathan Arnett. The next meeting will be on October 26, 2023, and the meeting adjourned at 1:48 P.M.
