Board of Directors July 2022 Meeting Minutes

Call to Order
Chair Harris called the meeting of the Somerset Community College Board of Directors to order at 12:57 P.M. She welcomed everyone in attendance.
Action Item: May 05, 2022 Minutes
Chair Harris called on Ms. Kelly Johnson to present the minutes of the May 05, 2022 meeting. Ms. Johnson reminded the board that the minutes were included in the agenda booklet that was mailed to board members in advance of the meeting. Mr. Marshall Todd moved the minutes to be approved as distributed. Mr. Brown seconded the motion. The minutes were unanimously approved.
Chair's Remarks
Chair Harris announced that Mr. Aaron Cook, the President of the Student Government Association, will be serving on the Board of Directors and SCC Leadership Council this year. Mr. Cook introduced himself to the board.
Action Item: FY 2022-2023 SCC Operating Budget
Chair Harris called on Ms. Jill Meece, Vice President of Administration, to present the 2022-2023 Operating Budget that was approved by the Board of Regents. Ms. Meece reminded the board that on May 5, 2022, she requested a budget to be presented to the Board of Regents in July. She discussed some of the changes that were made at the meeting and asked the SCC Board of Directors for a second approval. Dr. Cherry moved to approve the budget as presented. Mr. Duncan seconded the motion. The 2022-2023 Operating Budget was unanimously approved.
President's Remarks
Dr. Castle mentioned that at the last Board of Regents meeting, they voted on a 7% increase for all full-time employees. However, the Board of Regents will continue to look at the compression issues and collect the data to support those changes in the future.
Dr. Castle reported on SCC’s initiatives. The focus this year is to invest in areas the College will be successful. SCC purchased property, 30 acres and two buildings, near Valley Oak. Some classes are being conducted but some unexpected renovations need to be addressed before it is fully operational. The College invested in the reorganization of the admissions process and offices. Those changes are currently in progress. The College continues to use 4DX to help employees find where their focus and dedication should be to accomplish college goals.
Dr. Castle discussed COVID and the current increase in cases. SCC continues to look at ways to keep faculty, staff, and the community safe. However, the College needs to be able to move forward under the circumstances. Therefore, employees at the College are looking for and evaluating ways to do that.
Dr. Castle recognized a few employees at SCC. He introduced Dr. Ron Meade, the previous Director of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program, he was recently selected to be Dean of Health Sciences. He recognized Ms. Nikki Ware who was recently selected as a Blackboard Exemplary Course award winner and also selected as Faculty Fellow. He recognized Ms. Elaine Kohrman who is in charge of finding, researching, and writing grants that will help aid the College financially. Ms. Korhman has had a successful year.
Dr. Castle called on Ms. Clouse, Vice President of Advancement. Ms. Clouse invited the board members to attend the Hall of Honor Dinner and Auction. The event honors alumni and friends of SCC. It will be held Thursday, October 13, 2022, at the Center of Rural Development.
Dr. Castle called on Dr. Karleen Howard, the new Vice President of Enrollment Management. Dr. Howard updated the board on the enrollment process and the changes that are currently underway. The idea is to personalize interactions with students and make SCC unique from other colleges and universities.
Appointment of Nominating Committee
Chair Harris announced that new officers need to be selected in October. She asked Dr. Allison Cherry, BJ Brown, and Marshall Todd to serve on the nominating committee.
Chair Harris announced that Mr. Todd and Dr. Cherry’s terms will expire in August. However, they have agreed to serve on the board again. Until the Governor makes the reappointments they will continue to serve as board members.

Chair Harris announced the next meeting will be on October 26, 2022, and the meeting adjourned at 1:38 P.M.
