SCC recognizes two employees for their commitment to cultural diversity
Elaine Wilson, Director of Cultural Diversity for Somerset Community College, presented the 2011 SCC Diversity Awards at the Annual Fall Convocation held at The Center for Rural Development on August 5.This is the fourth year that members of the faculty and staff of SCC were recognized for their commitment to advance diversity of thought, culture, gender and ethnicity. This can be through service, curricular, and/or programming activities regarding racial, ethnic or gender diversity, disability, religion, national origin or other traditionally underrepresented groups.
The 2011 Diversity Award faculty and staff winners are Carol Severns and Stuart Simpson.
Carol Severns works at the SCC Russell Center as a Project BEAM staff member. Severns has been at SCC for eight years and has always volunteered to help with diversity projects. She has worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the Annual International Festival by providing exhibits on Japan at the Somerset Campus and Russell Center and also serves as usher and emcee for the international dance presentation performed by her colleagues at both locations. She helps international students working on their GED in two subjects, business affairs and English as a second language. Severns is a faithful member of the Diversity Initiatives Committee serving as Recorder, and through her efforts, helps to raise awareness and appreciation to diverse cultures and leads the way in expanding global awareness and improving the success of underrepresented students.
Stuart Simpson is a professor in the Visual Communication program and has been at SCC for twelve years. Simpson uses his skills to help promote the cultural and diversity events held at the College by designing programs and posters displayed on Campus and distributed in the communities that SCC serves. These marketing materials bring awareness to the events scheduled at our campuses and centers and also helps advance the diversity initiatives of the College. Simpson also conducts a two day seminar for the Governors Minority Student College Preparations Program held at SCC for middle school students. During the seminar, Simpson helps the students produce their annual newsletter by assisting with creating articles, artwork and interesting photos.
