SCC PTA Student Slated to Run for National OfficeJustin Kinder, a student currently enrolled in second-year studies in the Somerset Community College (SCC) Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) Program[BROKEN LINK], has been slated to run for national office of the American Physical Therapy Associations (APTA) Student Assembly Board of Directors. Kinder, of Lexington, was selected to participate in the election process at the 2012 APTA Student Conclave November 2-4 in Arlington, Virginia. He was nominated by classmate Debbie Lasure and is the only slated candidate from Kentucky.
The APTA Student Assembly is a component of the organization that focuses on issues relating to students. It serves as a voice for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students from the 504 accredited education programs in the U.S. plus those enrolled in developing programs.
Involvement in the APTA Student Assembly allows students to learn about issues related to physical therapy, become involved in professional activities and participate in the advancement of the profession.
Kinder holds an AAS in Radiography from Bluegrass Community and Technical College and worked in management at the University of Kentuckys Radiography Department in a Level 1 Trauma Unit. He then furthered his education, obtaining a Bachelors of Health Science in Clinical Management Sciences from the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences. He served as a member of the UK College of Health Sciences Advisory Board and presently serves on the SCC PTA Programs Advisory Board. While at UK, Kinder served as the co-leader of the UK College of Health Sciences Student Ambassador Program and participated in charitable events including Toys for Tots, Dance Blue and Gods Pantry food drives. He has volunteered with the Kentucky Special Olympics and in a number of interactive learning opportunities for young students with an interest in healthcare. He presently serves as the PTA Relations Project Committee Chairperson nationally.
Justin is an excellent student and is an asset to our program and our profession, stated Dr. Ron Meade, who serves as the PTA Programs Director. He has really made himself very marketable in the healthcare field and is an excellent representation of our program and the physical therapy profession. I have encouraged him to seek a doctorate degree in the future.
Other SCC graduates who served on the board in the past include: Chris Garland of Burkesville; Jeff Tyree of London; and Jeff Buis of Liberty.
Kinder is the only slated candidate from Kentucky. Other institutions with candidates on the ballot include: Alabama State University, Andrews University, Duke University, George Washington University, Marymount University, Mayo School of Health Sciences, Missouri State University, Regis University, Saint Catherine University, University of Medicine and Dentistry (New Jersey), University of Miami, University of Mississippi, University of New England, University of North Florida, University of North Texas, University of Oklahoma, University of Pittsburgh, University of Saint Augustine, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Utica College and Virginia Commonwealth University.
Kinder is a native of Phelps, Kentucky and presently resides in Lexington with his wife Sharon and twin daughters, Hadley and Tori. He is the son of Randall and Ernestine Kinder of Phelps. He is scheduled to complete an Associate of Applied Science Degree from the PTA Program in May, 2013 and plans to work in the Lexington area upon graduation.
