SCC Professor and Student Travel to Guatemala for Medical Mission Trip
Valerie Allen, recently retired SCC Registered Nursing professor, and SCC Surgical Technology graduate Tracy Denney participated in a medical mission trip to Guatemala this spring. Volunteers with the trip, organized by His Servant Ministries, traveled to Chiquimula, Guatemala to providing eye surgery to children and adults.
There is no government assisted health care in Guatemala and a large number of people live in poverty, said Allen, who retired from SCC in May. We mainly removed cataracts in the adults and corrected weak muscles in the children.
Allen, who resides in Somerset, said she assisted in the operating room as a circulating nurse and Denney also assisted in the operating room. Denney is originally from Stanford and now resides in Georgetown. She graduated from SCC in May. A total of 84 patients had surgery during the week Allen and Denney were there.
