SCC offering introductory class in ceramics and pottery

Somerset Community College will be conducting an introductory class in the art of ceramics and pottery, Saturday, January 22 and 29, in the new state-of-the-art studio at the SCC McCreary Center. The McCreary Center is located at 250 College Street, Whitley City.

The two-day class will be taught by Mark Snyder, visiting artist from North Carolina. Students will learn the primary construction methods of ceramic sculpture which are coiling, slabbing and pinch pot techniques. The first Saturday will be devoted to a brief presentation demonstrating the extent of complexity one can achieve with clay and then students will create at least one vessel and one sculpture. On the second Saturday, students will decorate and glaze their pieces.

The January 22 class will meet from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and the January 29 class will meet from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. There is a $60.00 fee which includes supplies and must be paid at least one week in advance.
