SCC hosted Kentucky bus technician training

Somerset Community College hosted a two-day statewide training session on June 28 and 29 for Kentucky school bus technicians. This was the first official meeting for the newly formed Kentucky Technicians Association (KYTA) and the sole purpose of the organization is to offer technicians the opportunity to receive training and share information on the maintenance of Kentucky state school buses and help implement the safest possible system of maintenance on the buses. Their number one goal is to help each county with any difficulties that they may encounter. Currently, Kentucky is leading the nation in the safety and maintenance of its bus maintenance and operations.

The opening session for KYTA was Tuesday, June 28 with over 100 technicians from 30 Kentucky counties in attendance. They held a brief orientation for all attendees in Meece Auditorium and then broke out into different sessions and workshops presented by Blue Bird, IC Bus and Thomas bus vendors. The Blue Bird training was on Blue Bird software, warranties, websites and online services. IC Bus conducted training on fuel maintenance, repair cost savings and Servicemax. The Thomas training was on electrical, service literature, troubleshooting and maintenance.

The training sessions on June 29 offered breakout training and orientation on the new hybrid buses. In addition to the hybrid orientation, the technicians had the opportunity to drive all the vendors buses. The SCC Diesel Technology shop enabled the buses to be viewed from an elevated position which helped with observation and training.

The two-day training session ended with a cookout at Burnside Island sponsored by all the participating vendors.
