SCC 45th Commencement Exercise held on May 6
Somerset Community Colleges 45th Commencement Exercise was held on Friday, May 6, at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset. A crowd of over 2,000 people watched as 264 graduates received their diploma or degrees. The Commencement reflects 1,200 students earning approximately 2,280 credentials.
Dr. Jo Marshall, SCC President and CEO, addressed the graduates and their families and wished all the students the best and encouraged them to keep in touch. Marshall said, We are so proud of you. You have accomplished a major milestone, but it is just the beginning to a wonderful life and career.
Andreia Lambert of Somerset was the soloist for the evening, performing Breakaway by Avril Lavigne, Bridget Benenate and Matthew Gerrard. Lambert is a cosmetology student on the Somerset Campus and received her diploma during Commencement.
Speakers for the evening were students, Tonya Davidson and Chris Garland, and faculty member Linda Ballard.
Davidson of Manchester, was the 2010-2011 Student Government Association President and was the student representative on the KCTCS Board of Regents. Davidson plans to transfer to Northern Kentucky University and pursue a bachelors degree in communications.
Chris Garland of Burkesville was named the SCC Most Distinguished Student of the Year because of her many accomplishments during her time at SCC. Garland was named a Coca-Cola New Century Scholar which is presented annually to the top community college student in each state and was also named to the USA Today All-USA Community College Academic Team.
Linda Ballard, Professor of Nursing, has been a faculty member at SCC since 1994. She is currently the Coordinator of the Associate Degree Nursing (RN) program and is the SCC 2011 New Horizons Faculty Award of Excellence recipient.
This was one of the largest graduating classes in the history of Somerset Community College, which reflects the tremendous growth SCC has experienced in the last several years. Enrollment for the fall 2010 semester increased 13% to a record 9,262 students.
