"Smart" Art to be the Focus of competition at SCC Earth Day
Artists and tinkerers of all ages have the chance to compete in the Somerset Community College (SCC) PRIDE Club’s smART art show, a sustainable media and recyclable technology competition. The contest, which requires entrants to use at least half recycled material, will be part of the upcoming Earth Day Celebration at SCC. Earth Day Celebration festivities will be held April 23, 2017 from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at the SCC Somerset Campus, 808 Monticello Street, Somerset.
Similar to a competition created by the SCC PRIDE Club students in 2015 which focused only on art objects, current club members developed a new approach to the contest. The “smART” contest now includes converting anything that would normally be thrown in the trash, like old clothes, toys and recyclable materials (plastics, aluminum or tin cans, cardboard and newspapers) into a work of art or into something that can function as a tool or machine. Marcus Barnett, club president, said the focus was to get the community thinking creatively and sustainably, and to reinforce the concept that reuse is even more environmentally friendly than recycling.
Anything that has been created using at least half reclaimed and recyclable materials is eligible to be entered into the show. Examples of items include jewelry, sculpture pieces, hand-dug clay, hand-mixed paints or anything else using items that would typically be thrown out or thrown away.
Prizes will be awarded for the top three smART competition entries. First place will receive a $50 VISA gift card, an Earth Day rain barrel, a T-shirt and a certificate. Second place will be awarded a $20 VISA gift card, T-shirt and a certificate. Third place will receive a $10 VISA gift card, a T-shirt and certificate.
The smART competition is free to enter, and open to the community. All entries will be displayed from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. during the Earth Day Celebration and winners will be announced that day. To enter, contact Marcus Barnett at firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications must be submitted by April 15, 2017. The application and rules for the competition can also be accessed on the SCC Facebook page at facebook.com/SomersetCC.
