SCC to Host Free Community Veterans Day Event

‚ÄčIn celebration of Veterans Day, Somerset Community College will host a free community event on Monday, November 12, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the Somerset Campus. The event will be held in the Meece Auditorium on the SCC Somerset North Campus, located at 808 Monticello Street in Somerset.

The Veterans Day event, led by SCC associate professor of Political Science and U.S. Army Veteran James Taylor, will feature Dino Melgoza, SCC student, SGA coordinator, and a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, who will lead the pledge of allegiance and members of the Southwestern High School JROTC will present and retire the colors.

The guest speaker for the 2018 SCC Veterans Day event will be Colonel (Ret) Steven Graham is a 36-year veteran of the United States Air Force, serving from 1968 until 2004. He was Chief of Supply for the Air Combat Command located at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia from 2002 to 2004.

Colonel (Ret) Graham's leadership in this role provided essential support to the Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom missions, as well as setting the tone for modernizing the approach to doing business with globally engaged airpower in a post-911 world.

Colonel (Ret) Graham was born in Princeton, Indiana. He and his wife Teri have a son, Ryan, and daughter, Casey. They also have five grandchildren.

Colonel (Ret) Graham's military decorations and awards include: Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit (1 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (5 OLC), Air Force Commendation Medal (1 OLC), Air Force Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (1 OLC), Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, National Defense Service Medal (2 Devices), Good Conduct Medal (1 OLC), and Humanitarian Service Medal.

Colonel (Ret) Graham has served the Air Force around the world with assignments in Texas, Saudi Arabia, Alaska, Colorado, Montana, Greece, Alabama, Ohio, Hawaii, South Carolina, and Virginia.

He began his career as an Administrative Specialist at Laredo Air Force Air  Base (Texas) and quickly established himself as a military leader, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant within just two years.

Throughout his distinguished military career, Colonel (Ret) Steven Graham applied his leadership and technical skills to formulate policies and execute operations that have been key to transforming the Air Force to meet this mission. It is an honor to welcome him as the keynote speaker for SCC's 2018 Veterans Day Celebration!
