SCC Clinton Center students bring home state wins

cosmetology students with basketsStudents in the Cosmetology program at the Somerset Community College (SCC) Clinton Center recently competed in the state SkillsUSA Kentucky competition, winning three first place titles and one second place.

Laine Shelton, of Monticello, placed first in postsecondary cosmetology. Dasya Smith, of Burkesville, placed first in secondary cosmetology, and Bethany Winchester, of Monticello, placed first in nail care with Megan Morrow serving as her model. Lakisha Downey, of Russell Springs, placed second in esthetics with Brittani Gossage as her model.

According to the Kentucky Department of Education, “SkillsUSA Kentucky is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry representatives working together to ensure Kentucky has a skilled workforce.  The organization helps each student excel.  SkillsUSA Kentucky is a member of the SkillsUSA national organization serving teachers, and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled, and service occupations.​”

Each year, approximately 1,000 students compete in SkillsUSA Kentucky in nearly 100 various areas.

The Cosmetology students from SCC will travel to Louisville in June to participate in the national SkillsUSA competition.
