“We are so proud of the effort that this group has put forward over the past two years,” said PTA Program Director Dr. Ron Meade. “They have earned this pass rate.”
This is the sixth year, out of the past seven, that the program’s graduates have achieved this milestone. In 2012, only 53 of the 284 programs nationwide achieved a 100% first-attempt pass rate. This pass rate should place the program in a tie for a first place ranking by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy when the rankings are released next spring.
Several of the 2013 graduates have been recognized statewide and nationally. Debora Lasure of Stanford won several national awards, including: the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) Outstanding PTA Student Award; Section on Geriatrics Outstanding Student Award; Mary McMillan Scholarship Award; and Outstanding APTA Student Core Ambassador Award. Bethany Smahaj of Winchester was name the APTA Orthopaedic Section’s National PTA Student of the Year and Justin Kinder of Lexington was elected to serve on the APTA Student Assembly’s Board of Directors. Shawn Frazee of Whitley City was named to the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association’s All-Academic Team and will be recognized by the association in the fall.
The class also participated in the winning effort in the 2012 and 2013 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge, a national fundraiser for physical therapy research, with the program being named “Outstanding PTA Program” by the Foundation for Physical Therapy for both years and was named the winner of the APTA’s Student Assembly Challenge.
For the first time in the program’s history, a program student received a perfect score on the examination. Bethany Smahaj of Winchester scored 800.
“I am unaware of any student having scored this high in Kentucky or, for that matter, nationally, in the past,” said Meade.
