Improving College Readiness and Student Success for Adult Learners
The changing American economy has sent more students than ever to two-year community and technical colleges for training in a new career field or to enhance existing skills. Many adults have lost jobs that did not require credentials beyond high school. These adults are now faced with entering college unprepared to do college-level work. Community colleges across the country are faced with the challenge of preparing adult workers for a successful transition into college-level courses. Then, ultimately placing them back into the workforce.
Through a grant from Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, or FIPSE, the team has been able to implement four initiatives to successfully transition adult workers into college-level courses and then back into the workforce.
- Develop curriculum and support services to accelerate the developmental education process for adult learners.
- Create a career coaching program to assist adult learners in making informed decisions and preparing for future careers.
- Develop a student performance monitoring system to track usage and outcomes of various student support services.
- Develop a systematic evaluation process for our developmental education program for short- and long-term measurements of success.
