Pulaski County AARP Chapter Donates Funds for Scholarships at SCC
Claude Tiller, left, President of the Somerset Chapter of AARP, and Zelene Cooper, right, sister of the late Evelyn Kelsay and Treasurer of AARP, presented two checks to Dr. Jo Marshall, center, President and CEO of Somerset Community College.
The Pulaski County chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) donated two checks, totaling over $500, to Somerset Community College in honor of the late Irene Vertrees and the late Evelyn Kelsay. The donations will go to provide scholarships to SCC students.
Vertrees was a member of AARP and worked tirelessly for more than two decades to form AARP chapters in Kentucky. She was a social worker, community servant and senior adults advocate. In 2003, Vertrees was named the National AARP’s Outstanding Volunteer. She passed away in May 2006.
Kelsay was an active member of the AARP chapter and often presented the annual gift in memory of Vertrees to SCC. Kelsay served as a teacher in the AARP Safe Driving Course and served as the chapter treasurer. She passed away in July 2012.
“Somerset Community College very much appreciates the continued support of the Pulaski County chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons,” said Dr. Jo Marshall, SCC President and CEO. “This donation will be used to provide scholarships to students who will serve the community as these two wonderful ladies did.”
AARP is a national organization and leading supporter of senior adult issues.
