MCTC Hosts GED Graduation Ceremony

Maysville Community and Technical College hosted a GED graduation ceremony on June 1 to celebrate the accomplishments of 120 students from Bracken, Fleming Lewis, Harrison Mason, Nicholas, and Robertson Counties who earned their GED in 2012-13.

“Over the years we have had people as old as 70 and as young as 16 complete the GED through our program,” said program director Bill Teegarden. “The highlight of each graduation is listening to the graduates share the challenges they have faced and thank the people in their lives who helped them to reach this point.”

MCTC Chief Academic Officer Dr. Juston Pate presented a special certificate of achievement to all the graduates. A graduate from each county received the Outstanding Student Award:

David Mattox (Fleming County) received the Fleming County Fiscal Court Award for Outstanding Student
David Stasa (Harrison County) received the Harrison County Adult Education Award for Outstanding Student
Ronald Parker (Robertson County) received the Hester Stewart Memorial Award for Outstanding Student
Jennifer Ross (Lewis County) received the Libby Smith Award for Outstanding Student
Ashley Wentworth (Bracken County) received the Elizabeth Parker Memorial Award for Outstanding Student
Nathan Falconer (Nicholas County) received the Becky Reid Award for Outstanding Student
Larry Hayslip (Mason County) received the Martha A. Crockett Memorial Award for Outstanding Student
Kelsey Shupe (Mason County) received the Lillian H. Rice Award for Student Achievement

"We like to give the graduates the experience of walking across the stage,” said Mr. Teegarden. “It reminds me of the reason I go to work each day."

Also recognized at the ceremony was Gail Merrill. Ms. Merrill received the Kentucky Adult Education Volunteer of the Year Award from Mr. Teegarden in recognition of her support and dedication to the Adult Education Program. Ms. Merrill has volunteered for the Mason County Adult Education program for nearly eight years, spending one or two days a week in the office. She also serves as the vice chair for the Mason County Adult Education Advisory Council.

MCTC Offering Plumbing Program at New Montgomery Extension

Maysville Community and Technical College is pleased to announce that beginning this fall, you will be able to take plumbing courses that will lead to the KCTCS 2nd Year Plumbers Mechanic Certificate. This certificate is a series of lecture/lab courses totaling approximately 32 credit hours. Topics covered in these courses include:

Plumbing Fundamentals
Basic plumbing systems and rough-in of plumbing fixtures
Pumps and water heaters
Finish plumbing
Service and repair
Industrial Safety
Blueprint reading
Preparation for the State Journeyman License Exam

These courses will be offered at the Montgomery Extension of MCTC, which is located at 201 Calk Avenue, Mt. Sterling. All coursework will be taught by licensed Journeyman and/or Master Plumbers. Students who complete this program combined with required work experience will be permitted to sit for the Kentucky State Journeyman Plumbing License Exam.

Get even more fun out of your summer by joining Maysville Community and Technical College for Career Craze to be held June 3 - 5 on the Maysville Campus.

Career Craze will offer hands-on career exploration for sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Activities will feature many career tracks, including agriculture, culinary arts, robotics, cosmetology, architecture, energy systems, entrepreneurship, public service, military, animal science, education, manufacturing and healthcare.

Career Craze will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. each day with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the first day.

There is no cost to attend; however, students will need to pay a $12 lunch fee at registration or bring their lunch each day.

MCTC Rowan Campus to Host Kids’ College

Maysville Community and Technical College (MCTC) Workforce Solutions is inviting all kids ages 5 to 11 to four days of fun-filled and action-packed learning. The MCTC Rowan Campus Kids’ College 2013 will be held May 28 - 31 and is designed for kids who love hands-on activities.

Participants in the 5 to 7 primary group will explore books about dinosaurs and animals that live underground, discover how Dory and Nemo survive near the coral reef and try out a variety of paint techniques to create different effects.

Students in the 8 to 11 secondary group can choose their favorites from weather science, astronomy, forensic science, archery, computer software and basic self-defense classes.

Kids’ College will be held each day from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. All classes for both age groups will be held at MCTC’s Rowan Campus Downtown Extension located at 229 Flemingsburg Road in Morehead.

The cost to attend Kids’ College is $60 per student. Applications are being accepted through the morning of May 28. Early registration is encouraged due to limited seating availability.

MCTC Student from Flemingsburg One Step Closer to NASCAR

Darrin Brooks has a lot in common with other Maysville Community and Technical College students. The 20 year old from Flemingsburg, Kentucky is working on an Associate in Arts and thinking about a possible future in business. The similarities end, however, on a race track.

Darrin recently signed a contract with J & T Racing Driver Development for seven races this year to race at Elko Speedway in Minnesota, Illinois State Fairgrounds and DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in Illinois, Madison International Speedway in Wisconsin, Iowa Speedway, Kentucky Speedway and Kansas Speedway. The latter three races will be featured on FOX Sports’ SPEED TV.

His racing career began with the occasional Go Kart stint at the Fleming County Raceway in Goddard, Kentucky at age nine.

“At that time I was playing sports and really did not take racing seriously like my brother, Derrick, and my dad,” said Darrin. “But one night we decided as a family to let me race and I was the fastest go kart there.”

The contract with J & T Racing will prepare him for the Automobile Racing Club of America, or ARCA, series, which holds strong ties with NASCAR. The contract will also provide quite a publicity boost for Darrin as past ARCA races have been broadcasted on many of the major television networks as well.

“J & T is willing to help me with sponsorships,” said Darrin. “They will coach me to be successful and this will give me a higher chance to get to NASCAR sooner.”

His most memorable racing experience took place in Elizabethtown, Kentucky in 2008. He came within only a couple of inches of winning in a $5,000 stake race. He walked away with half that amount and an even bigger passion to make it to the top. For Darrin, the top reaches all the way to NASCAR.

“My plans are to be in the top 3 NASCAR levels,” said Darrin. “I also plan on having my own team to help young drivers follow their dreams of racing in NASCAR.”

Darrin plans on racing his number 64 Chevy at the Elko Speedway in June.

Maysville Community and Technical College (MCTC) held its 44th commencement exercise Friday evening at Mason County High School Fieldhouse.

Dr. Ed Story, president, and Mr. Charlie Calvert, MCTC Board of Directors chair, welcomed those gathered to honor the graduates. The student address was given by Mr. George Shoemaker from the Licking Valley Campus in Cynthiana.

Dr. Story presented the Distinguished Service to Education Award to Nelson and Pauline Hester. In December 2011, Mr. and Mrs. Hester gave the Maysville Community and Technical College Foundation a gift to be endowed with income to provide scholarships and aid to Robertson County students with awards to be made based on financial need and merit. The impact of this gift is and will continue to be magnificent and far reaching. Robertson County School students graduating this year will be the first beneficiaries of the Hester's generosity.

The Distinguished Alumnus Award was presented to Marsha Story Carver, a member of the class of 1984. Mrs. Carver went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education Science from the University of Kentucky; a Masters of Arts in Education in Secondary School Counseling from Western Kentucky University; a Rank I Level I Principalship in School Administration and Leadership Supervision from Western Kentucky University; and Level II Educational Administration and Leadership Supervision also from Western Kentucky University. She began working in the public school system teaching science in 2004. In addition to her classroom work, she is a Science Consultant for AdvanceKentucky, working to expand access to and participation and success in rigorous college-level work in high school, particularly among underrepresented student populations. Mrs. Carver is also a National Trainer for Pre-AP curriculum for Laying the Foundation, a math and science initiative.

Following those recognitions, candidates were presented by Dr. Juston Pate, chief academic officers, and degrees conferred by Dr. Story.

Maysville Community and Technical College will be offering the Emergency Medical Technician Class-Basic (EMT-B) as a credit class in August 2013. Led by Miles Hughes, this class will meet Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. beginning August 19 on the Maysville Campus.

In order to be eligible, students must complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), and score on the 10th grade level in math and english as well as the 11th grade level in reading. The TABE can be taken free of charge through MCTC’s Adult Education program. CPR certification is also required before the class begins.

Individuals who have completed the COMPASS test should bring a copy of their scores to the Office of Workforce Solutions located in MCTC’s Technical Building, room T-101 on the Maysville Campus.

The tuition charge for this class is $840 in addition to other fees, including the Practical Test. Financial aid is available for those who qualify. A payment plan is also available.

Students must submit a completed admission application, liability insurance form, a copy of their driver’s license and a copy of their high school or GED diploma to Workforce Solutions by August 5.

Background checks must be submitted to Workforce Solutions by October 1.

Required supplies for the class will be discussed during the first class meeting.

OSHA COURSES TO BE HELD AT MCTC’S NEW MONTGOMERY EXTENSION

Maysville Community and Technical Workforce Solutions will be offering the OSHA 10-Hour Industry Course and the OSHA 30-Hour Course at the MCTC Montgomery Extension, located at 201 Calk Avenue in Mt. Sterling, this month.

OSHA-10 is designed to help organizations and individuals understand and meet OSHA requirements. This course will meet Tuesday, May 14, from 5:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. and Wednesday, May 15, from 8:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. The cost to attend is $150.

OSHA-30 is available to organizations or individuals classified as general industry according to federal OSHA, and specified for respective employers and their entry level employees. The course will cover material on a variety of safety and health topics. Meeting times will be Monday through Friday, July 29 to August 2, from 3:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. The cost to attend is $350.

Maysville Native to Discuss Bringing Big-Budget Films to Life at MCTC

Have you ever wondered how special effects in movies are created? Maysville native Darrell (Dee) Abney works in the movie industry and will share insight on this exciting career field at a presentation open to the community at Maysville Community and Technical College.

Abney worked on the stop-motion animated movie ParaNorman as a character and prop modeler with a team of artists at Laika in Portland Oregon. Recently he has been working as a 3d modeler for Pixomondo of Los Angeles on Star Trek into Darkness and After Earth, both opening in theaters this month.

He worked as a Senior Modeler/Texture Artist for the films Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Chronicles of Narnia 3 while working for the Moving Picture Company in London. He also worked as a Senior Character Artist for Sony Computer Entertainment in San Diego on computer and PS3 games including MODNATION PSP, NBA 09, and High Velocity Bowling.

Dee is a 1997 graduate of St. Patrick High School. He graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1999 with an Associate of Arts Degree in Industrial Design Technology.

He is the son of Darrell H. Abney Sr., Professor of Mathematics, at Maysville Community College and Kay Abney, retired English teacher from St. Patrick High School.

The upcoming blood drive on the MAYSVILLE Campus is Wednesday, April 24 from 11:00 – 4:00 in C106. All donors will receive a $10 Wal-Mart gift cart. The Mathematics, Science, and Agriculture department will be hosting an astronomical observation with telescopes of the Moon, visible planets, and other space objects on Saturday, April 20, 2013, from 8:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. EDT, weather permitting. The observation will take place in Parking Lot A, just off the US 68 entrance on the Maysville Campus.

MCTC Offering Two New Programs in Fall 2013

Maysville Community and Technical College was recently approved by the Kentucky Community and Technical College System Board of Regents to implement two new degree programs, Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice and Associate in Applied Science in Clinical Laboratory Technician, starting in the fall 2013 semester, which begins Monday, August 19.

“We are excited to be able to offer these two new areas of study,” said MCTC President Dr. Ed Story. “The college is sensitive to the needs of area employers and students. We feel that these new programs will give students marketable skills that local employers are searching for.”

The Associate of Applied Science Criminal Justice includes tracks in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, Corrections, Security and Loss Prevention and certificates in Computer Forensics, Criminal Justice Core, Corrections, Law Enforcement, and Security and Loss Prevention. The program prepares students for entry into the field of police work and related occupations. The curriculum gives the student theory, principles, and techniques employed by criminal justice agencies and police units. The study of the law as it relates to criminal justice agencies, human behavior, government and communications along with specialized course work comprise the curriculum.

Graduates from the AAS in Criminal Justice program may seek job opportunities on the federal, state, county and municipal levels. With experience, graduates could move into administrative or supervisory positions in corrections, security and/or law enforcement. Criminal justice careers in policing, corrections, and private security are expected to increase between 12 and 14 percent, with wages averaging up to $18.36 per hour in 2010, according to the Kentucky Occupational Outlook to 2018.

The AAS in Clinical Laboratory Technician program provides students with the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills to work under the supervision of a registered clinical scientist or pathologist in a clinical laboratory, hospital, or other health agency. Students learn to collect specimens from the patient and perform laboratory tests in all areas of the clinical laboratory to include immunohematology, clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology and urinalysis. Upon completion of the program, the graduate is eligible for the national certification examination as a clinical laboratory technician. According to the Kentucky Occupational Outlook to 2018, employment in this field is expected to grow 11.7 percent between 2008 and 2018 with an average wage of $17.10 per hour in 2010.

MCTC Chief Academic Officer Dr. Juston Pate said, “These programs provide our students high-demand employment options in the local workforce. We are continuously evaluating our current programs and looking into new areas to ensure that our transfer and technical programs are meeting workforce needs and student demands.”

MCTC Student Competing in State PBL Competition

Shannon Harlow, Vice President and Treasurer of Maysville Community and Technical College’s Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter, will compete in this year’s Kentucky State Competition. The event will be held during the Spring Leadership Conference on April 12 and 13. Shannon will be competing in the Accounting Principles category including competencies such as basic principles of financial accounting, terminology, measurement, valuation, realization, worksheets, and professional standards and ethics.

Shannon is the 19 year old daughter of Veronica Harlow and the granddaughter of Pam Sebastian of Tollesboro. She is completing an Associate in Science degree with an emphasis in Nursing through MCTC.

PBL, an organization geared toward students preparing for careers in business, entrepreneurship or other business-related fields, has recently been re-established at MCTC under the direction of Associate Professor of Business Administration Wendy Noble.

“The main focus of PBL has been on student involvement, community service, and leadership,” said Noble. “We wish Shannon the best of luck at the state leadership conference.”

MCTC Celebrates 20 Years of Hosting Regional Science Olympiad

Maysville Community and Technical College is getting ready to celebrate the 20th anniversary of hosting the Maysville Regional Science Olympiad on Saturday, March 23, 2013. The Olympiad will begin at 9:00 a.m. on the Maysville Campus of MCTC. An awards ceremony will take place after the scoring of the events.

The overall winning teams as well as first place finishers in each event will qualify to advance to the state competition on April 27, 2013 at Western Kentucky University.
