Federal Work Study Program (FWS)

Are you interested in working while you are in college? Do you need assistance with finding a job that will compliment your studies? There are many opportunities available to students looking for work while attending school. We want to assist you in locating the work opportunity that best supports your vocational and educational goals.

The Federal Work Study Program provides funds that are earned through part-time employment to assist students in financing the costs of postsecondary education. Students can work up to 20 hours per week (based on their unmet need and budget) both on-campus and off-campus.

On-campus employment can be anything from working in an office to outside grounds keeping. Click here for a list of positions on campus. Most of these may already be filled. Student can earn $7.50 per hour in these positions, paid via direct deposit on the 15th and 30th of each month.

Off-campus employment consists of tutoring in reading and math at local elementary schools, as well as various community service positions. Click here for a list of tutoring positions and here for a list of community service positions. A few of these positions may have been filled. Students can earn $8.00 per hour in these positions, paid via direct deposit on the 15th and 30th of each month.

FWS students will not work during the months of July and December. This includes on and off campus positions.

To be eligible for the Federal Work Study program…

  • Students must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours.
  • Students must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA.
  • Students must declare a major. (Undecided majors are not eligible.)
  • Students must meet the SAP and MTF/degree audit requirements each semester. (Please refer to the college website at http://somerset.kctcs.edu for these requirements.)
  • Students must have a completed financial aid (FAFSA) application on file for the current financial aid award year.
  • Students must have enough unmet need remaining on the current year to award FWS. It may be necessary to decline loans if you do not have enough unmet need. Click here to view how Unmet Need is calculated.

Your total FWS award depends on:

  • when you apply
  • your level of financial need
  • your school's funding level
  • a supervisor's willingness to hire you

If you are interested, please email Loretta Johnson at loretta.johnson@kctcs.edu and include your student ID. If you are eligible for Federal Work Study, a reply email will be sent with an application for student employment and a background release form attached. After you return both forms to the financial aid office, and the background check clears, you will be contacted as job opportunities are available.
