Veterans Benefits

Veterans and reservists receiving MGIB Benefits can use Web Automated Verification Enrollment to submit their monthly verifications.

First time applying Veterans

You can apply for benefits at www.gibill.va.gov and in 4-6 weeks, you will receive a certificate of eligibility. Bring this to your local VA representative. Questions can also be emailed to nicole.long@kctcs.edu.

Processing Time

The VA office in St Louis, Missouri processes applications for students attending a school in KY. The processing time for this office on all requests is usually 12 weeks.

Once your application has been reviewed and processed, you will receive a letter from the Veterans Administration stating your eligibility for VA educational benefits. This letter needs to be forward to SCC’s VA Coordinator to pursue with your class certification.

Meanwhile you need to apply for admissions to our school, declare a major and enroll in classes. In order to receive your monthly VA educational benefits, if found eligible, you need to declare a major (undecided is not accepted) and you can only be certified for those classes that go towards your declared program.

Credit for Prior Training and Experience

All applicants must have their prior educational training and experience evaluated. Your military transcript or previous college transcript needs to be sent to SCC’s registrar office. The evaluation will include training and experience received while on active duty and/or for any course(s) completed at an approved educational institution (this includes course work prior to your duty).

Request for Certification each semester

Each semester you must report to our SCC’s VA Coordinator your plans to attend school and the amount of credit hours you plan to take. Once enrolled, we will be able to certify those credit hours with the VA department so they can process your monthly benefits.

VA will only approve the courses required for the degree/diplomas you are pursuing. Required remedial classes will be approved and must be taken in the classroom. No online remedial classes will be approved. It is the student’s responsibility to make our VA Coordinator aware of their enrollment each semester.

Change in Place or Program

Anyone receiving VA benefits at SCC who intends to undergo a change of program must talk to their advisor and notify the school’s VA Coordinator. Through your advisor you will make the change on PeopleSoft (by filling out the “blue” form); by notifying the VA coordinator you will be notifying the VA office by completing the required Change of Program/Place form.

Change in status of enrollment

Anytime you make any changes to your schedule, such as dropping or adding a class you are responsible in contacting SCC’s VA Coordinator. Failure to do so can result in an overpayment you will have to repay to the Veterans Administration.
